Rockets can only achieve a payload mass fraction of <5% for orbital launches. From the Moon's weaker gravity, this fraction increases to nearly 50%. Earth is a deep gravity well, but the Moon is a great launch pad. Reaching higher-energy orbits is "halfway" to anywhere.
