@Canis_Atra @not_a_jug That’s the problem with these « own » maps dividing Europe (or whatever geographical zone). The criteria are not explicit. The categories almost always hide some racist or stupid personal though.

@not_a_jug @Canis_Atra I agree. Anyway I don’t see how Western values can be a criteria here, as most of them come from Southern Europe and were just rediscovered and updated in Western Europe after the fall of Constantinople.

@not_a_jug @Canis_Atra Humanism did not originate in Northern Italy. Renaissance is just what it means : rediscovering the ancient (greco-roman) values.

But these Ideas were spread and refined in the wider philosophical discourse of the countries I mentioned. Humanism originated in Northern Italy, but got picked up in the enlightenment, by french,german and...

@not_a_jug @Canis_Atra Western values come from Rome (including Christianity) and Greece. What original values did the Germans bring ? Ubermensch ? And British ? Free market ? Is this what we are supposed to be proud of ?

@UnPassant_ @Canis_Atra I tried to imply this before by giving the example of the european enlightenment. When we speak of western values they largely are of French, British and German origin (Of course also in reference to greek and roman philophy of antiquity). Look up the most famous philosophers

@Canis_Atra @not_a_jug Western Europe would be UK and France alone (centralized states). Southern Europe would be Portugal, Spain and Italy alone (loyalty to Roman pope power). I don't know yet the criteria for the two other categories but I already know that 🇧🇪, 🇳🇱and 🇩🇪 are not Western Europe.

@UnPassant_ @not_a_jug Unlike Spain and Italy, which were the loyal bedrock of Papal authority, France actively stripped Rome of its power. Ever heard of Gallicanism? France literally hijacked the Papacy, dragged it to Avignon, and turned it into a puppet for the French Crown.

Mi padre (boomer) se iba a Francia y en 3 meses en la vendimia, ganaba el dinero para comprar un coche. Y al año siguiente se iba y en tres meses ganaba para comprar un solar. Y al otro año se iba y ganaba en 3 meses para hacer la casa. Por eso estaba deseando trabajar. Ahora te vas, te pagan 1800€, has pagado 800 de alquiler, 400 de gastos y 200 de los billetes de ir y volver, te vuelves con 1200€, que no tienes ni para cambiarle las ruedas y el aceite al coche. Y el 20% te lo quita hacienda al año siguiente. Estamos deseosos de trabajar los jóvenes.

@MurciaConLimon Hijo de rico y quejandose. Cuantas casas teneis ? O solo trabajó dos años y despues al paro ? Mi papa trabajaba todo el año de obrero y por supuesto cada año ganaba para comprarse dos casas y tres pisos. Pero a él lo que le gustaba de verdad eran los Ferraris. Teniamos 5 o 6.

@not_a_jug What is futile imo is to do maps based on one’s own opinion. For instance, I can do a map with Germany alone in one color and all the other countries with another color. And if you ask me why such two categories, I will tell you « because I like it this way ». 🙄

@UnPassant_ This is very much opinion-based. This was just a post I made as a fun discussion point, expecting maybe 1 or 2 responses max. Feel free to do this based on objective criteria, although I think that would be very hard, if not futile. Could certainly be interesting

@UnPassant_ @not_a_jug Are you historically illiterate or something? Its patently obvious that france is less catholic than spain. Spain never dealt with large amounts of protestants. Spain never had an antipope. Historically the south is associated with catholicism and the social impact ot brings.
