Margin accounts are used to purchase additional shares beyond the cash equity contributed to the brokerage account (50% max limit). Securities-based lending allows borrowers to borrow against the assets in the brokerage account (usually up to 20% LTV) in the form of cash to be used for whatever proceeds the borrower desires. Interest expense usually includes a PIK option to allow borrowers’ to preserve cash flow.

Rich people don't sell their assets. They keep them and borrow against them to buy more assets. Stocks, property, gold, crypto, and even certain watches are assets that you can borrow against. By doing this, you eliminate capital gains tax. I wish I had known about this earlier.

@djvlad This is good advice but hard to implement for people who aren’t already at least modestly wealthy. Not all financial institutions provide these loans to even upper middle class customers
