Over 400 workers at University of Strathclyde are striking this week in a push back against job cuts and a lack of consultation on organisational changes - that means cleaners, lab techs, estates and security staff are now out on the picket line 📣 In December, it was revealed that the university is set to slash 76 full-time posts, as a result of a £35m funding gap. Meanwhile, the former principal and vice-chancellor received a remuneration package of £428,000 in 2025 - with a further £3.6 million divided between the university executive team. Strathclyde University remains in a fundamentally healthy financial position with £478.4m of its net assets being “unrestricted”. As oil and gas prices rise and global supplies grow more unstable, the government’s approach to the North Sea is putting jobs and energy security at risk. Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham said: “The government’s position on oil and gas is putting jobs and national security at risk. Blocking oil and gas production in the North Sea, especially now is simply an act of monumental political self-harm. Domestic gas from Jackdaw and oil from Rosebank are essential for jobs and for energy security. We cannot let go of one rope before we have hold of another. Workers at the @Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester city centre have taken the historic decision to unionise at one of the largest hotel chains in the world✊ In the days after submitting a collective grievance, staff faced derogatory comments for engaging in Union activity and refusal from management to even consider the request for formal union recognition - a basic workers’ right. More seriously, they believe they are being subject to Union Victimisation through suspected breach of surveillance laws and the suspension of a team member involved in the union. Three workers involved in the campaign have said: "Breaking our backs for lazy management that don’t care about our wellbeing in and out of work has to stop. Having our concerns repeatedly ignored has forced us to join together to fight for a better workplace." "Hospitality workers face some of the lowest pay and worst working conditions in the UK.
