Maharashtra State Cyber department issued notices to Apple and Google seeking the removal of ride-hailing applications Uber, Ola and Rapido from app stores over alleged illegal bike taxi operations in Maharashtra, escalating the state government’s crackdown on aggregator-based two-wheeler taxi services. The notices, issued on May 15 by the Office of the Additional Director General of Police, Maharashtra Cyber, invoke Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and direct the companies to “remove and disable access” to the applications from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The action follows a letter sent by Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik to the Cyber Department on May 12 seeking intervention against bike taxi platforms operating in the state.

The government's first instinct when it cannot license, tax, or capture a sector as a vote bank is to ban it. Rapido and bike taxis solve two genuinely hard Indian problems at once: abysmal last-mile connectivity that sarkari babus never fixed, and the shortage of flexible income for someone who owns a bike and needs to top up his monthly income. That is a rare double win. Naturally, this makes it more threatening to the gormint, not less. "How dare this 20 year old boy with a bike from a tier 3 town make 25K in extra income from a part time gig! This sounds like anti-national activity funded by George Soros!"

A government that cannot create jobs for millions of young men is now going after the private sector platforms that let any guy with a bike earn an honest living with a flexible schedule. Rapido has more than 3 million active captains across bikes, autos, cabs, and deliveries, with bike captains typically earning Rs 15,000 to 30,000 a month working hours they choose themselves. Uber provides earning opportunities to over 1 million driver-partners in India and Ola has a comparable number. In total these ride hailing apps are providing well paying part time jobs to more than 5 million Indians. This shows that these apps have created more actual livelihoods than any Indian politician has managed to deliver outside the imaginary promises of an election manifesto. Yet they are being hounded at a time when the Indian economy is already struggling, the rupee is rapidly collapsing in value, and AI is devastating the formal job market.

@kejimao Umm Vietnam will win China + 1 because of it's close proximity with China. Geography is destiny. Same reason China got industrialized because it was closer to Japan, S Korea ,Taiwan and USA. Stop pretending that Chinese are special or something.

Many years ago, I gave two presentations on how China builds its industrial and technological ecosystem—one for an Indian audience and one for a Vietnamese audience. Although the content was largely the same and went into many details that were rarely mentioned in other settings, the feedback from the Vietnamese and Indian participants was strikingly different. When I discussed the gaps between Vietnam and China, my Vietnamese friends listened very attentively to my analysis of Vietnam’s weaknesses. They even proactively acknowledged Vietnam’s deficiencies and asked me to analyze more specific issues in greater detail. However, when I compared China and India, many Indian friends became quite argumentative. They tried to compete with or challenge the Chinese perspective on almost every point, to the point where I could barely develop my analysis. As a result, they might have won the debate, but missed a valuable opportunity to have a meaningful exchange. So, I came to know which country would be the real winner for "China+1" many years beforehand.
