For the Measure ULA heads. The LA City Council’s committee that aims to recommend a new local measure for the November ballot will be chaired by DTLA Councilmember Ysabel Jurado with Valley councilmembers John Lee and Imelda Padilla also on the panel.

My first story for L.A. Material is a behind-the-scenes account of the week that remade the L.A. mayoral race — how the city’s political class scrambled to marshal an alternative to Mayor Karen Bass, and ended up w a challenger no one saw coming. lamaterial.com/p/five-days-th…

St Patricks day and our mayoral candidate plays bartender for a night. To treat it like a cute photo‑op instead of a paycheck. I spent ten years coming home at 3 a.m., reeking of smoke, and scanning the driveway to make sure no one was waiting to jump me. That’s the difference between performing “working class” and living it.
Noah Goldberg@Noah__Goldberg

Mayoral candidate @nithyavraman got behind the bar last night at Tom Bergin’s and served beers and drinks to St Patrick’s Day revelers. Raman said she’s never worked as a bartender, but worked at Starbucks as a teen.

LA eviction attorney Dennis Block submitted a court filing in 2023 containing fake case law. It set off a debate about the use of AI in legal proceedings. Now, he's facing disciplinary charges from the CA State Bar. Read more in my @LAist story: laist.com/news/housing-h…

A highlighted version of the Act and its appendices is provided to clearly show the changes made over the past year. If you work in government, advocacy, or compliance, it’s a helpful way to stay up to date on the latest requirements. Take a look here: fppc.ca.gov/.../2026/2026_…

We’ve posted the updated 2026 Political Reform Act. The Act is updated annually to reflect statutory changes enacted by the Legislature or by voters through the initiative process.

@mrnonel Takes too long to build, or even start building, and the process incentivizes the kind of corrupt land use tactics we saw in the Huizar scandal.

@mrnonel No, but I think that investigation was a factor in then getting real scrutiny & imploding before the project could be finished & made it harder to negotiate someone to takeover (COVID didn’t help either obviously. Would still say it exposes issues w/ our approach to planning.

Can we please not ignore that an LA City Hall corruption scandal is at the heart of why this project fell apart during construction, sat untouched for years, & only then became a beacon for taggers?

The LA graffiti towers are a symbol of unchecked wealth inequality. They were never meant to house the unhoused people on the streets below so the people tagged them up as a reminder that solving homelessness requires more than luxury condos. I’m sorry you don’t know our city.

Mayor Matt Mahan@MattMahanSJ

LA’s infamous graffiti towers are a symbol of California’s failures on housing. We’ve simply made it too difficult, too expensive, and too slow to build — and that means it’s too expensive and difficult for people to find homes. I’m running for governor because I know we can do better. Read my plan at MahanForCalifornia.com/housing.

Mayor Bass started the fight against ICE and she’s proud that our city stood together with tens of thousands joining in. Now Greg Bovino is reportedly headed for retirement. Angelenos will never back down from protecting our immigrant neighbors.

I just tried to drop off an in person form for public records w/ a CA state agency (per their websites instructions) and was told I could only do it by calling a number because the office is closed “due to COVID.” It’s 2026.

One of the few positive surprises from the Charter Commission was them reversing a previous decision to leave this unaddressed. These *proposed* changes give candidates an extra week, and reduce the min sig threshold to 350. Still 7x most races on our ballots but would be big.

Having gone through the petition gathering process and qualified for the ballot myself, I now believe that the 500 valid signature requirement should be lowered. It's a ridiculously tall hurdle that keeps too many candidates from making it onto the ballot.

It appears as though the City Clerk has completed their review of all nominating petitions. A couple of the mayoral candidates, and a few Council Candidates, have fallen short of the threshold in the latest update. Most notably, CD 11 will be decided in June.
