Look at how far the pollsters dropped Texas after the Florida loss (CFP wasn't out yet). From 9 to 27 in the AP and 7 to 19 in the coaches poll. That's tough to overcome. Especially when you get taken to OT by Kentucky and MSU after your big win. They dug themselves too big of a hole with the Florida loss and even after they beat Oklahoma they were questionable at best against conference bottom feeders.

You'd have more right to complain if the SEC played 9 conference games. As it stands, you have 3 losses and two of them are ugly. The ugly losses are what's keeping them out, not the week 1 loss. You were ranked 9th in the AP and 7th in the coaches poll before the Florida game and fell to 27th and 19th respectively after that game. It's what did them in. Sadly the CFP wasn't out yet so we can't tell how far the committee would have dumped them. But my guess is that it would have been comparable to the pollsters.

@zach_barnett The CFP makes no sense at all, but what’s the alternative? At the very least, the panel needs to be all ex players or coaches. Even then you’d find leaning one way or the other.

Ole Miss has had its best season in 60 years. Texas A&M had its best since joining the SEC. Vanderbilt and Oklahoma had breakthrough seasons. And yet the SEC Championship will be Alabama vs. Georgia for the third time in five years.

So if getting the L column trumps all else, then teams will schedule OOC to avoid all L’s (no risky opponents)
