🚨 CONTROVERSY IN BARCELONA!
❌Neither the referee nor VAR considered this Cancelo hold on Elanga a penalty, but just minutes later Barça were awarded a penalty for a similar play ✅
What do you think? 🤔

Did Trippier deserve a red card?
Let’s uncover this sequence.
First, we need to decide if this foul is stopping a promising attack or denying a goal scoring opportunity. Distance to goal, number of defenders and direction are all checked. BUT the one element that isn’t is control of the ball. Raphinha even without getting fouled would have to lunge to try and get to the ball. That explains why this is stopping a promising attack. Why is this still a yellow? Because the defender makes no attempt to play the ball.
Final decision : Penalty YC.

@a_derll This is a penalty. Cancelo clearly hold Elanga by the shoulder once he gets beaten. There is much force needed to put Elanga off balance here. VAR should’ve intervene.
@heis_fede Donnaruma makes himself smaller once the ball is played behind him trying to not make contact butVini runs INTO him. This is the right call. No foul
Bernando clearly makes himself unnaturaly bigger and has his arm in an unjustifiable position. BUT let’s talk about the sanction. The new law changes talks about if the handball denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick for a non-deliberate handball offence and gives a yellow card. In my opinion, this isn’t a deliberate handball. Bernando’s arms are behind his back but by leaning over to try and block the shot, the ball touches his arm. His arms not being far from his body adds the non deliberate element.

@tuomof This is what makes it a penalty. The difference is very little but important. The hand being behind his back and not leaving his body are the key factor.

The cherki incident is a penalty. Ball left the foot and he gets kicked after.
The handball isn’t a penalty. Garcia’s arm are coming towards his body and are deemed to be in a justifiable position. He isn’t making himself unnaturally bigger. It’s a ball towards the hand scenario.
@VARuncovered@heis_fede Not really tho, it’s a huge redirection from the stomach and he turns to avoid his hands increasing his mass. Just unlucky and very debatable if it’s a justified penalty or not. VAR is a joke anyway and the ref from this match should eat a brick
