Valve is full of shit on this one. The hardware in that Steam Machine is nowhere near worth $1,049. A 6-core Zen 4 CPU, RDNA 3 GPU with 8GB GDDR6, 16GB DDR5, and a 512GB SSD should cost them maybe $550–650 to build at most — and that’s being generous. They’re charging over $400 extra just because it’s small and runs SteamOS. That’s not “refusing to sell at a loss,” that’s straight up overpricing the box while acting like they’re some noble company that won’t subsidize hardware. Just build a small form factor PC for less money and install SteamOS yourself. You’ll save a few hundred bucks and not have to pretend Valve is doing you a favor.
