Here’s my take on Sea of Thieves Season 17. From my perspective, this is probably the weakest season to date, delivering the least amount of content we’ve seen in a major update. The “new” voyage is essentially a re-skinned version of ones we’ve been doing since launch, now with black powder kegs and tied to a new trading company that doesn’t function like any other. There’s no reputation to build, no emissary to represent—just a name on paper. The highlight is the new smuggler locations. Rare continues to excel at environmental design, and it’s always great to see the world evolve. But beyond that, the season feels empty. It leaves me asking why. I’ll probably get some pushback for this, but I believe the people at Rare care deeply about the game and want the best for it. I can’t help but wonder if the recent layoffs and behind-the-scenes changes (things we’ll never fully know) played a role in this season’s thin offering. With no meaningful rewards to chase and gold holding little value, the smuggler content will likely fade into obscurity as soon as commendations are complete, much like the Skull of Siren Song voyage. When I look at the game’s current potential, I can’t help but think we should focus on improving what we already have instead of adding shallow new features. A “Season 9” style update full of quality-of-life improvements and sandbox expansions would go a long way. All in all, I’m disappointed with this season, but I’m still hopeful. I’ll always root for this game to succeed, and I’m looking forward to what comes next. @SeaOfThieves
