@Venator92 Show me a bad server and 8 times out of 10 I’ll show you a priest who hasn’t trained them properly…

I normally like what Brian has to say on a lot of issues, but this is plain wrong: the liturgy is impoverished without altar servers - even “geographically confused nine year olds.” Liturgy uses symbols, bells, incense, candles, processions, to draw every sense into the sacred actions - a Mass without servers is a Mass without bells, without incense, without torches, without processions of cross and candle. I can’t tell you how sad it is as a priest, how totally depressing, to celebrate your parish’s main Sunday Mass without a single server!
Brian Holdsworth@briankeepsworth

The most annoying part about this debate is that we think priests need altar servers. Like they can't perform the mass unless geographically confused 9 year olds are stumbling around the sanctuary. The only reason we have servers is to encourage vocations.

@pluant As a diocesan priest of nearly five years I'd also say the standards for altar servers at the novus ordo is very very low.

I couldn’t find myself caring much about the girl altar server issue in the 90s because the Novus Ordo already has so little for servers to do.

@BDamian25 @MrCasey62 Saint Pius V covered all this in De Defectibus. If a threat emerges whilst Mass is being celebrated then certain abbreviations can be made.

@RomanoSace57080 @MrCasey62 What if one has already consecrated one element Father? I once asssited at a mass where a parishioner collapsed midway through the canon, the priest simply continued

@chilternrailway But your posters contradict themselves, the sign has a cross through mobile phones but then the other poster says "keep conversations to a low volume". I challenged someone talking on the phone and they said they were talking quietly so ok.

@Venator92 Hi, We do rely on the good etiquette of passengers sitting in the quiet zone to adhere to the requested conditions. Most of our services are driver-only services; therefore, there is no way for us to enforce or police this. ^VB

@chilternrailway I love the idea of a quiet zone but the practice of "quiet" varies quite a lot. People holding long conversations on phones / with each other kind of defeats the point does it not? Perhaps it would be better to have a silent zone which is clearer? Just a thought

I do often wonder why Priests / parishes bother producing a weekly newsletters given so few people (even regulars at weekday Mass) seem to read them. Is there a better way to communicate changes / cancellations?

@sitsio I'd love it if just occasionally a high ranking prelate offered to celebrate or even just attend the requiem Mass of someone who died in obscurity.

@sitsio Anyone who has studied church history knows that councils don't always lead to growth or to clarity. In fact some Councils had to clear up the mess left or lack of decisive action taken by a previous council (Lat V and Trent springs to mind).

I simply don't understand why the anti-Trad people care so much. Do they lie awake at night worrying that people are kneeling for Communion or learning chant? I honestly don't get it. Same with individual priests who refuse to give Communion on the tongue. Just...why?

Think I saw someone say that this is about a quarter of all the diocesan clergy. Find it astonishing how much trouble some bishops create for themselves by their hysterical attitude to liturgical traditionalism. Just leave the Trads and conservatives be, man.

@lawrrober89 @RCCoulombe If we reveal a not very serious fault, e.g "oh he's a bit forgetful". It does also depend on the status of the person we're speaking of.

Detraction, although a mortal sin, is very popular amongst us Catholics. One is telling a truth, not a lie, and so feels good about oneself. St. Philip Nero taught against it, but we do not listen. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detraction

@NelwynToes @austeni @CatholicHerald The issue is not the reformed rite per se, rather those who scandalized (and continue to do so) by irreverence to the Blessed Sacrament and making the Mass entertainment rather than worship.

The campaign by @CatholicHerald and Cdl. Burke to overturn #TraditionisCustodes frames the Benedict era as a time of “liturgical peace”. No mention of liturgical traditionalism turning into a schismatic movement opposing the modern papacy, dividing parishes.

@austeni @CatholicHerald Well in the interests of balance we must mention the liturgical liberalism since 1970 turning into a schismatic movement opposing multiple Papacies and dividing parishes.

@Michael_J_Matt A parish I used to serve in puts it thus " day X is a holy day of obligation which means you attend Mass if you can". I ignored it when I did verbal announcements.

By the way, if anyone has a Catholic Church bulletin in which the words “mortal sin” appear in any context, I would be grateful to have a photo of it. We’re working on a story about the decline of emphasis in the church on the four last things— death, judgment, heaven, and hell. Thanks.

Does your parish still have a mandatory Sunday and Holy Day Mass requirement? I can't remember the last time I heard of a priest or bishop remind his faithful that missing Mass on Sunday is a mortal sin. How about you?
