I have just landed in Beirut for a visit of solidarity with the people of Lebanon. They did not choose this war. They were dragged into it. The @UN & I will spare no effort in striving for the peaceful future that Lebanon & this region so richly deserve.

The installation of DG of #unesco @KhaledElEnany6 marks a new chapter in the history of the Organisation, one with high expectations and hope for transparency, integrity, efficiency, cooperation and freedom of expression.

@UNESCO was not created to manage paperwork, but to enlarge humanity’s horizon — through education, culture, science, and the free exchange of ideas. If we forget that, we risk reducing this house of vision into a house of bureaucracy. (222nd session of Executive Board)

The result of the vote of the @unesco Executive Board for the post of Director-General sees Khaled Ahmed El-Enany Ali Ezz of #Egypt obtaining 55 votes out of 57. He will be presented to the General Conference as the nominated DG.

At its first meeting today, the @unesco EXB Bureau observed a minute of silence in memory of our colleague and friend Ambassador Emmanuel Mthethwa of @SouthAfrica. Members of the Bureau paid tribute to him.
