The digital euro is a very European problem. The instinct is right there: do not outsource your money rails to dollar stablecoins and foreign platforms - not again. Then the machine arrives: limits, committees, bank protection, careful language, fear of its own idea. Build it! The danger is not the idea; the idea is good. The danger is Europe building the right thing so carefully that nobody wants to use it.

@Goltra @naval Communist. I've seen this in Romania in the 80s. The most nationalistic people were in the communist party.

@naval Hopefully the Nationalists and Socialists don't merge parties... don't even know what you'd call a party like that...

As the elites get kicked out of each party, we are going from Republicans vs Democrats to Nationalists vs Socialists.

In 2019, it was “nationalists vs socialists.” In 2025, it morphed into “nationalists vs communists.” As someone who grew up in communist Romania, I find this funny. The communists were extremely nationalist.

I asked Grok to analyse the AC war under my tweet. Apparently, 60–70% of replies took a small joke about culture literally as a claim about shade, saunas, stone walls, or America. Only around 20–25% seemed to catch the point: civilisation comes in flavours. Not every joke survives contact with the 'For You' feed.
Victor@VicSpinei

Americans keep laughing that Europe has no AC. Fair. But we have cold plunges, saunas, shade, stone walls, late dinners, and the strange ability to walk outside in summer without crossing a car park the size of Belgium. Civilisation comes in flavours.

@GoldilocksOrbit @naval You can assign more or less meaning to it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or maybe, now, in the model, reading it.

@allnewsisbad I made a small joke about AC. Someone replied with a dead grandmother. The escalation culture is impressive. Very kind people.

@VicSpinei You can have a late dinner and then take a nice shady walk to your grandmother's wake because she died from heat stroke in her unairconditioned apartment.

@VicSpinei If you all weren't bitching about it to the world, Americans wouldn't even know it was hot in Europe right now. Btw, everything you listed, we have as well, but we also have parking lots and AC. Also, I would suggest you use those cold plunges, you stinky bastards.

Okay we have cold plunges, saunas, shade, stone walls and late dinners but I'll give you the car park thing that shit sucks. If any Europeans went to a game in Arlington I would imagine it would take a lot of strength not to blow your brains out so kudos to them.

@VicSpinei Yes. I hate the whole Europe vs America thing. I love both. For different reasons. My perfect world would be European geography, history, culture, and daily rhythm of life with American liberties, security, prosperity, and abundance.

@VicSpinei You see your pub culture as a fabric. We see it as a flaw and an example of a poor work ethic. When you’re putting down your 3rd pint, we’re finishing up our last report. That’s why we’re always ahead. 🤷‍♂️

Not unique, no. But sauna culture is very Finnish, cold plunge has old Roman receipts, and shade was not submitted for European copyright. The point was the mix. Civilisation comes in flavours.
Maximus Cortex@TheSaltonsailor

@VicSpinei Saunas and shade are unique to Europe? Late dinner is a flex? We have stores bigger than Belgium.
