We had a heavy tank early in the war, the M6. But the idiot general in charge of Army Ground Forces said that we don't need heavy tanks, because "tank-on-tank engagements were unlikely to occur" due to the doctrine that American tanks weren't meant for fighting other tanks--that's what tank destroyers were for. So they built six of them, cancelled the production, and never sent them to Europe. Then there was a new heavy tank program, the T-29, but he did everything he could to stop that too. The M-26 was actually meant to be the medium tank that served with the M-29 and replaced the Sherman. After he'd killed the T-29, he went after the M26 as well. Fortunately, he was killed by friendly fire while visiting troops in Europe. But it was too late, really, and the M-26 only saw the very tail-end of the war in small numbers. Another charming thing for which he was responsible was the INTENTIONAL undergunning of even the upgraded Shermans with a gun that was incapable of penetrating German heavy frontal armor, because it would "encourage" US tank crews to seek out engagements with German tanks. May he burn in Hell.
