Every time someone in Washington has a bad week, that waterway gets a bit narrower. Right now it is approximately the width of a letter box, and oil prices are doing what oil prices always do when adults are not in charge, which is going completely and utterly insane. Now. The estate agents. This is the detail that keeps me awake. Why does a peace delegation to one of the most strategically sensitive negotiations on earth require property professionals? I have been racking my brain. The only explanation that holds together, if you squint and tilt your head, is that someone was attempting to acquire a stake in some sort of Hormuz-adjacent enterprise. A port authority, perhaps. A logistics company. Something with the word “international” in the name and a chairman who wears a lot of gold. Trump getting into the ownership structure of the very chokepoint his military is supposedly fighting over would be, in any previous administration, the kind of thing that ended careers. In this one it is Tuesday. Iran, to their considerable credit, apparently noticed. Meanwhile, back home, the administration is talking about conscription. Actual conscription. The mandatory enrollment of young Americans into military service, which is either a sign of profound strategic confidence or the most terrifying admission of overextension in modern American history. I leave it to you to decide which, though I note that the people making this decision have children of precisely the wrong age and security details of precisely the right size. Seven billion people looked at Donald Trump and understood immediately what they were looking at. They had read the biography. They had watched the first term. They had seen a man attempt to remain in power by means that, in any country without America’s particular combination of luck and institutional stubbornness, would have succeeded. They filed this information away under “obvious.” Seventy million people looked at the same evidence and saw a genius. This is the central mystery of our age and I do not have a satisfying answer to it. What I do have is the image of a speeding car. It is travelling at a hundred and thirty kilometres per hour toward a cliff edge that is clearly visible from quite some distance. The people responsible for steering it are busy. JD Vance flew to Budapest this week to campaign for Viktor Orbán, five days before the Hungarian election. Not as a private citizen. As Vice President of the United States. Let us be precise about what that means, because the words matter. Orbán has spent fifteen years turning Hungary into a one-party state with the trappings of elections. Controlled courts. Captured media. Gerrymandered constituencies. A leader who says the EU is a greater threat to Hungary than Russia,  while taking Russian gas, blocking EU sanctions, and vetoing military aid to Ukraine at every opportunity. This is what Vance flew in to endorse. This is what Trump called complete and total support. This is what Rubio came to validate in February. The analogy writes itself, and it is not comfortable. In 1956, Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest to crush a Hungarian uprising and keep a compliant government in power. The world was horrified. America condemned it as definitive proof of what the Soviet empire actually was beneath the slogans. Seven decades later, the United States is doing the political equivalent without the tanks but with the same logic: a great power intervening in a small country’s election to keep the right man in charge. The right man, in this case, being the one most useful to Moscow. That is the geometry of it. Vance spoke of Christian civilization and shared moral values while standing next to a man the European Union has spent years formally sanctioning for dismantling the rule of law. The same rule of law that America spent the entire Cold War telling the world was the thing that separated us from them. America used to be them’s biggest nightmare. It has become them. Europe has seen this before. Different flag, same playbook. The conclusion writes itself, and nobody in Brussels, Warsaw or Tallinn is struggling to reach it. This White House is not an ally. It is a subsidiary, and the parent company is in Moscow. Seventy years of partnership. Ramstein Air Base, the most important US military hub outside America, is built on German land provided rent-free, with Germany contributing hundreds of millions to its upkeep. The US couldn’t replace it anywhere in the world. 2. Every US military operation in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia flows through Ramstein. Lose it and US power projection in the Eastern Hemisphere is crippled. 3. The UK provides and maintains RAF Lakenheath used almost entirely by the US Air Force. Italy provides Aviano. Greece provides Souda Bay. Turkey provides Incirlik. European land. European infrastructure. American operations. 4. The US Sixth Fleet depends entirely on European ports for fuel and supplies. Souda Bay, Naples, 11 Greek ports. Without them the Sixth Fleet cannot operate in the Mediterranean or project power into the Middle East. 5. The majority of NATO’s intelligence and surveillance capacity is hosted on European soil and fed directly to the CIA, NSA and Pentagon. 6. Early warning radar at Fylingdales, UK. Missile tracking in Greenland. Norwegian monitoring stations near Russia. All dependent on European goodwill. 7. It would cost America MORE to bring the troops home than keep them here. European hosts subsidise roughly a third of all basing costs. 8. Europe is America’s largest arms customer. Stop buying American and part of their defence industry goes bankrupt. 9. The bases aren’t charity. They’re America using European soil, European money and European goodwill to project power across the world. 10. We’re not the freeloaders.
