A Hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship Hondius has killed 3 passengers, with 5 more suspected cases onboard. The strain is Andes virus, originating from Chile and Argentina, and it's the only Hantavirus variant confirmed to spread human-to-human through close contact. Every other Hantavirus strain requires direct contact with infected rodents. This one doesn't. The ship left South America in late March and is now near Cape Verde, trying to dock in the Canary Islands to repatriate passengers. 🇺🇸 The CDC has classified the hantavirus outbreak a "Level 3" threat and activated its Emergency Operations Centers. Level 3 is the lowest tier of activation and pretty standard for this stage. 8 suspected cases have been reported globally, including 3 deaths. The WHO says more cases may be coming.
