The film is flat out more interesting as a meta-construct than a straight film. a viewer that is not actively attempting to deconstruct the symbolic filmmaking and storytelling mechanisms of the story are honestly going to be confused

In the flood story waters descend from above and ascend from below. This is the undoing of day two, the separation of waters. In other words, Noah passes through the de-creation of the world, and participates in the re-creation, starting on day one again.
