Ken Cao-The China Crash Chronicle
Interesting how Chinese social media is using “execute line” to critique the U.S., yet Americans take it as normal. Meanwhile, in China, the CCP crushes dissent, erases people from society digitally, and calls it “stability.” Hypocrisy and propaganda aren’t unique to one country. The U.S. struggles with inequality, but China’s state-controlled system leaves zero room for escape—poverty or protest can literally get you erased. Americans might suffer financially, but at least they aren’t disappeared for posting online. Real power isn’t about hype—it’s about control, and China’s control is on a whole different, declining trajectory.

On Chinese social media, the hashtag "Execute line" has been trending, referring to the extremely narrow margin for error for average Americans. Many Chinese living in the US and ordinary Americans share stories of how hardworking Americans end up poor or even homeless.  The phrase "execute line" initially referred to a video game element that described the particular heal threshold beyond which an enemy can be quickly killed by a "execute skill", bypassing defense. Nevertheless, the word has been used more broadly as a metaphor for the American society's reality in recent social criticism and internet discourse. When people's income drops below this invisible "red line," the social system kicks in like a domino effect, crushing them in no time. The middle class plummets into homelessness as a direct consequence of this.   The "American Xiaohongshu refugees" incident could be this year's most significant online cultural interchange between Chinese and American people. Through candid communications, the Chinese have better understood the plight and life of the American working class, dismissing stereotypes such as "homelessness is caused by laziness," while Americans have learned that China is not as negative as the Western media and some anti-China politicians portray.   Poverty, I believe, is no longer America's most severe societal concern. The poor's acceptance of their plight and the chasm that exists between elite and public schools are more pressing problems. Religious beliefs and practices continue to have a significant impact on American society. It seems to me that a lot of Americans just accept their prolonged poverty and lack of understanding as why it happens. To many of them, the rich are wealthy because “they are fortunate”, whereas the poor are poor because “they were born into the wrong family”. What else can they do? Accept it. This explains why low-income Americans frequently work two or more jobs, but their voices are rarely heard, and society ignores their misery. First, they're too busy to complain; second, many of them have accepted their fate, so what's there to complain about?   The deeper cause is the enormous divide between elite and public education in the United States. The quality of many public schools is lacking, and kids in poorer communities sometimes have little choice but to attend low-performing schools. Knowledge of history and social theories are not presented to them. They will find media smears and distortions of other countries, together with outdated American dreams, which will persuade them to believe that all of America's problems are caused by non-American nations. Until they have the ability to think critically, they will not understand why their lives are getting worse. The American working class has no choice but to succumb to the cruel combination of fatalistic religious beliefs that “this is my fate” and the constant brainwashing they receive from Western media. As a result, during every US election, Chinese public may be perplexed by the promises offered by candidates to their people. Isn't "serving the people" what politicians are meant to do? The Americans have learned from centuries of capitalism education that "serving the people" is not the federal government's job description. Any politician who says, "I am willing to serve the people" is considered a messiah. This is sad. What's left of the American Dream today? The illusions of the Gold Rush have long faded, social inequalities have cemented, and ordinary people have accepted their fate. American society has become a jungle, inappropriate for individuals who follow the rules in pursuit of their aspirations; it is only suitable for rich people who can easily navigate the world of capital. The dream of "providing shelter for all the poor and needy" is unrealistic in America. In America, all social resources come with a price. Including human dignity.

Xiaohongshu also helps us Chinese better comprehend the plight of the working class in America. We used to believe that those who become homeless or addicted to drugs weren't trying hard enough. Now we know that no matter how hard they worked, it didn't offer them the happiness they deserved; on the contrary, their lives only become worse without hope. Even more repulsive to me is capitalism, which keeps the wealthiest people in power while destroying the lives of the most honest and industrious citizens. Xiaohongshu is filled with American stories of how they had to drop out of university due to financial issues, how they could hardly afford a nice meal at a good restaurant for their children's birthday, and how they had given up hope and saw no way out of their agony. China isn't without its flaws; we have our fair share of issues. However, seeing how those decent and honest American working class people suffer makes me very sad and uncomfortable. Things are not intended to be this way.

You deny the Nanjing Massacre. History does not. Here are receipts, not Chinese, but Japanese, German, American, archival, medical, filmed. 1) Japanese military officers’ own confessions Tanaka Gunji (Captain): “We killed more than 30,000… by bayonet, machine gun, burning, burial.” Mukai & Noda, the ‘100-Kills Contest’ (published in Tokyo Nichi-Nichi Shimbun): A race to see who could kill 100 first. Not rumor, your own newspaper printed the kill score like a sports column. Iwane Matsui (Commander of Nanking Operation) Acknowledged responsibility at Tokyo Tribunal. Primary court transcripts remain public to this day. 2) Foreign eyewitnesses, neutral, on the ground, not Chinese 📌 John Rabe (German, Nazi Party member) “Hundreds of rapes daily. Screams every night.” 📌 Minnie Vautrin (American missionary) “Women dragged away like livestock… never returned.” 📌 American & British doctors Hospital logs show bullet wounds, amputations, bayonet perforations, not propaganda, medical records. These people documented what they saw with their own eyes. No ideology. No politics. Only reality. 3) Archival evidence (film + photos + diplomatic cables) • NARA, U.S. National Archives • German Foreign Office cables from Nanking • League of Nations refugee reports • Nanking Safety Zone Committee records • Red Cross dispatch logs Paper survives longer than denial. Final line: You don’t erase history. You only confess your inability to face it.
