@kiwitalkz @AndresRestart I honestly just want both and think it's possible to do both something that appeals to Mario fans, is filled to the brim with easter eggs and wonderful visuals and still have a good story. Not saying it's easy! But I don't understand people who argue we shouldn't just get both.

@AndresRestart The first movie I was mixed on, the animation, easter eggs and music were phenomenal but the story was a mess tonally and in a narrative based medium that is the most important part. That movie and this is very much aimed at kids and mario fans, hence why critics dont like it.

The critical reception of the first Mario movie did not match my experience at all, I imagine the same will apply here too. They just don’t get it.

I really hope DKC finds a permanent home, I adore the series and both Retro and Rare left very big shoes to fill! Series deserves to be a mainstay.

@kiwitalkz @setaimx @Attackdabacklog What do they do with artists, designers and programmers if they don't have a high level creative team working on preprod of the next game while the previous game wraps? They just keep the bulk of the team in transit between projects? They don't usually do layoffs...

@setaimx @Attackdabacklog Possible but very unlikely, Nintendo doesn’t operate that way. Nintendo generally don’t approve projects until a pitch outline has been presented to them first

We're all ncreasingly divorced from physicality, so we wanted to build a monument for not only our international teams to gather around, but for the rest of the gaming community to rally around. We wanted people to get excited for the next big game on their list, and we wanted to do it in a way that employed skill & craft, by hand, to drive people outside to see it, and to talk about it. So many people assumed it was AI, or even a "UE5 render." Expectations are understandably low. We saw by the reaction, however, that excitement is at an all-time high. We hope that your favourite game is announced, whatever it may be. We hope that the people making it feel empowered enough to go out and talk to you about it. We hope that the physical world still plays a large role in the adventure that is the video games industry. We at Larian will continue to invest in ways to be tangible, and present, and open with what is clearly an excited and engaged audience. The level of skill & craftsmanship in creative spaces has never been higher, and I hope we can all make time to go out into the world and appreciate it when we see it. That physicality between the process and audience is that maintains a necessary level of mutual respect. It is very much ok to be excited about video games, and we can't wait to see you in person, when we're ready, on the road to Divinity. Oh and thanks for not setting it on fire.

@kiwitalkz Very interesting. I imagine Nintendo wants more DKC, so maybe that moves to EPD as well. I'll be happy to see more Metroid Prime , I suspect MP4 will still sell very well, first party Nintendo games aren't in the same place they were in the Gamecube era :)

I doubt DKC ever happens again, there were special circumstances that allowed that to happen. Nintendo consider Retro Studios their technical showcase studio and Nintendo bought them to make games they themselves couldnt make. Retro have spent almost a decade building up their tech for more highly detailed games as well as been hiring devs from ID Software, 343, DICE etc. basically devs with FPS experience. Unless Prime 4 completely bombs which doesnt look likely Prime 5 is the most likely outcome. Nintendo and Retro will take feedback from Prime 4 onboard but at the end of the day, sales will be the main determiner. A lot of the divisiveness you are seeing for Prime 4 plagued Prime 2 and 3 at release, its just hyper inflated this time due to social media and the 18 year wait. Sales will dictate the direction Retro ends up going.

@kiwitalkz Super curious about your gut feeling on this - Dors Prime 4's relatively muted reception affect your prediction on what Retro works on next? I'm wondering if they havr a higher chance to bounce back to DKC now, even if I still personally lean towards Prime 5 next.

@ZoidCTF What a great game that was. Was just 11 when it came out and a couple years older when I finally played it. Now I'm 34 working as producer on a game myself! Hope we can make it as memorable as this one :)

Here’s what probably would’ve happened if it was blocked: Layoffs would’ve continued. Activision Blizzard cut 800 staff in 2019 despite record profits. What do you think would’ve happened during the 2025 dip? In 2021, they cut another 190 employees. Shareholders would’ve demanded cost cuts or restructuring after losing out on their $95/share deal. That means layoffs maybe even selling off chunks of the company like EA is likely about to do. Or hey, they might’ve sold to Saudi. Kotick was selling one way or another. The stock would’ve plummeted and kept sliding, just like every other major gaming stock between 2021 and 2025. (EA ↓ 20%, Take-Two ↓ 35%, Ubisoft ↓ 65%, Embracer... Do I need to say it? Then in 2022, they added roughly 3,200 employees a 33% spike in headcount, partly to make the company look healthier during merger scrutiny. By comparison, the total impact to gaming jobs across ALL of Xbox doesn’t come close to that. Sorry, but no random X user or even Lina Khan, who failed to make a compelling case to block this deal is going to convince me her version of reality would’ve been better.

I think its getting to the point where I need to have a moratorium on anything Retro/Metroid related cause anything I say seems to spiral into something I cant control. I got a heads up about the GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit posting about my 'Metroid Prime 4 isnt finished' tweet and as usual, they didnt post the full context, fixated on the 'its not finished' and chose to sensationalize it to cause drama. Im getting on top of this now before website publications and youtubers start taking it as an opportunity to get clicks. As I mentioned in my previous tweet about vague release dates, ITS NOTHING TO PANIC ABOUT! Its not in development hell, its not Prime 1 development all over again, its not incompetence at Retro, its none of that. When devs give a vague release date it means it isnt finished, it means we THINK we can have it ready sometime within this timeframe. Metroid Prime 4 is in its final stretch! so its NEARLY done Contrary to popular belief, Nintendo greatly cares about Metroid as a franchise and they want to ensure that it is the best it can be because there is a lot riding on it since we havent had a Prime entry since 2007!! I keep getting asked about a release date, I think a September release seems unlikely personally (it seems too close now) and I think November or December will be when it comes out. @kiwitalkz Do you foresee any possible future for 2D DK Country games, perhaps at EPD? Deeply grateful for 3D ones already, but Country has and forever will have my heart. Loved Retro's games, open to new teams trying their hand at it.

Im seeing people taking Nintendo's comments about there being 2D & 3D Donkey Kong going forward as Retro continuing with 2D Donkey Kong, No that's copium. It's unlikely Retro returns to Donkey Kong again, there were unique circumstances at play to allow them to make the DK games. Retro's original existence was to make games for Nintendo that they themselves couldnt make. There are so many internal teams that can make a 2D Donkey Kong game, there is NO ONE other than Retro that can make a Metroid Prime game at the caliber they make them. I am not saying they are going to become the Metroid Prime studio, I imagine after Prime 4 they will do Prime 5 then move onto another IP due to franchise fatigue I am also not saying that Retro arent capable they certainly are and Tropical Freeze is easily Top 5 2D Platformers ever made but we are in a different era of Nintendo and a different era of Retro. I just want to keep everyones expectations in check here.
