TVL is a good indicator of trust among users and overall functionality. If Alex Bosworth was right, every pleb and their mother would put their 0.1 BTC into strategic Lightning channels in order to make money from routing fees. I know that I tried that myself and I lost more money from rebalancing channels than I gained from routing transactions.

I think you're continuing to misunderstand me. My central issue with your original post is that you use the very low TVL (Total Value Locked) number as a justification for why Lightning is failing to deliver on its promises. The reason this is wrong is because if we imagine a platonically ideal design and implementation of the lightning network, we should see TVL *decrease*, because it is a necessary resource that is required to deliver on the goal. As lightning gets better in its design, we should expect to see this number go down. To drive this point home, if it required the entire 21M coins to be locked in lightning channels to move around a few million dollars of value per day, this would be a horribly expensive design. However, the implied narrative in your original post suggests that a 21M coin TVL would be a good thing. It should be obvious that it is not. If you want to attack lightnings success, you should be looking at coin velocity and providing statistics that point towards it being disappointingly low, because the velocity of value transfer is its fundamental value proposition, NOT how many coins we have to lock into channels to make that coin velocity possible. Is this making sense?

@Vladcostea Bruh, criticize lightning if you want but TVL is a *cost* metric, not a *value* metric. The most wildly successful outcome for lightning would be infinite velocity of coins with zero TVL. Pick a better justification.

“It’s fine that we didn’t scale the Bitcoin base layer because look, most users don’t care about self-custody and storing 12 words is too hard for them” Dude, look at USDT on Tron. Most of Latin America, Africa & the Middle East uses it daily via non-custodial wallets. Same tech as Bitcoin. Same UX. Actually scratch that, as the UX is much worse: users need to buy a freaking gas token that they hold or even stake in order to pay transaction fees. Oh and the transaction fees usually hover around $3-$5. More expensive than Bitcoin, but still cheaper than Western Union. So these guys will happily pay. So how come hundreds of millions of people know how to manage 12 words to use Trust wallet, Metamask or Solflare And they manage a freaking gas token But Bitcoin is somehow challenging to use? Mother of psyops, be my MILF!

@Vladcostea It's fine for you to criticize lightning. That's not my contention. I happen to be out of the loop on the issues on the ground these days but it pisses me off when people push a narrative with statistics to make it sound more legit when they only serve to mislead.

You know that Lighting is not very good tech When it was built since day 1 to be blockchain agnostic With atomic swaps between chains being heavily advertised in the beginning And a year of scrutiny & testing on Litecoin Only for Litecoin to stop maintaining it Decred is the only other chain that still supports Lightning And Lightning on Bitcoin, in spite of all the hype and heavy marketing, has less than 0.023% of supply locked in channels and only works decently when heavily centralized (though there are failed transactions even between custodial wallets) What a waste of time and resources! If only we didn’t put all eggs in this basket and encouraged the market participants to come up with the best designs for scaling solutions where self custody + unilateral exit are non-negotiable But then again, I’m pretty sure that the companies supporting Bitcoin developed secretly hope nothing ever gets achieved so CBDCs and other centralized solutions can get adopted within this short window of opportunity Tether on Tron is the best example of such a product. So successful even the most hardcore maxis are afraid to criticize it due to various conflicts of interest

Your guess is wrong. USDT on Tron has higher volume than BTC itself. Litecoin has been more used on BitPay for like 2 years. Monero is the king of darkweb markets. BCH is used across more payments processors than Lightning. Dash is unbelievably popular at ATMs and payments processors. None of them use Lightning. None of them would have any technical legitimacy if Lightning worked as advertised.

@Vladcostea I would guess it's because most cryptocurrencies are for speculation, not payments

@giacomozucco let's say this, you were fence sitting, arguing against both sides, and given illogicality of it, generated a lot of argument. genuinely even figured out how you fit that seemingly illogical bias towards knots/110 (my impression) in your head, after our lengthy discussion in DC

For anyone interested about the truth: Adam Back is absolutely, overtly and veritably lying about me *ever* supporting BIP110, or even being "a fence sitter" about it. I have always strongly, clearly and unequivocally opposed any similar fork proposal since the very earliest suggestions. I have always been, and remain, consistently opposed to: - using consensus rules to tackle specific types of onchain spam, - defensively addressing any kind of "illegal data" moral panic in any possible way (mempool policies included), - enforcing any controversial consensus change (including the ones I agree with, unlike this one) without clear full-ecosystem agreement. It's a bit unfortunate that a very influential voice in the industry is lying about me, since I have a smaller reach to debunk him. Maybe some of you can help me by spreading the correction. Thanks.
Adam Back@adam3us

@giacomozucco @ocean_mining the overlap of that company with the ring-leaders is near 100%, so i'm poking at that. obviously. i assume you are the token "vocal anti 110 insiders" they misleadingly claim in their later post. (and you've been a bit of a fence sitter on and off, though currently against, net)

Since last year, I’ve been saying on my podcast that Ocean has a mining pool, a separate node client, and a different development agenda Which appears to be a hard fork in the making to push their own “pure” coin Been called a dumb shitcoiner who doesn’t understand Luke’s game and Nakamoto consensus But I was so right 🤷🏻‍♂️

FIFA script got leaked: Spain 🇪🇸 will eliminate France 🇫🇷 Argentina 🇦🇷 will eliminate England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Argentina 🇦🇷 beats Spain 🇪🇸 in the final and wins another World Cup. Messi wins the Golden Boot. Messi wins Player of the Tournament. Messi wins his 9th Ballon d’Or because of it. He retires as the undisputed greatest footballer of all time. And right on cue, the biggest Ronaldo PR campaign in history begins just to make sure his name is still forced into every conversation about Messi. Book it.

No, that's the beauty of these narratives that they come up with. In them - they're the freedom fighters. When they say they're gonna make our lives miserable, they see themselves as George Washington with the rebels, taking down those soldiers from overseas England, who have ruled with tyranny.
