To put this into perspective: this is costing at least(!) £4500 per cm of track. Per cm! From announcement to completion, the project will take at least (!) 31 years (probably more). China built 26,000 miles of high speed track in under 15 years, enough to roughly circle the globe. And it did it far faster than we've built HS2, which is under 200 miles long, and has slower trains. The Artemis project, which just flew humans around the moon, cost more than 10 times less than HS2, which (best case scenario) will transport humans from London to Birmingham and shave about 25 minutes of the travel time. For the cost of HS2, the UK’s high speed rail project, we could have bought: over 4,000,000 state of the art driverless vehicles to move people around the UK. That’s over 15x the capacity of HS2. We could have built close to 100 Burj Khalifas, the tallest building ever constructed, or given every single person in London £12,000, or built 15,000 schools. Probably the funniest one is that we could have purchased five thousand miles of high speed track in China, for the same price, and it would all have been built by now.
