On this Yom HaShoah, the Michigan Senate adopted my resolution to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day. But the conditions feel so much worse for Jews since I first started introducing this resolution years ago. Holocaust denialism is on the rise. Hate crimes against Jews are at a record high. Here at home, Temple Israel set ablaze last month harkens back to an era from history books. Both political parties have an antisemitism problem, with candidates, podcasters and influencers on either extremes benefiting from trafficking antisemitism. We must listen to Jewish voices in peril before it’s too late.

The repeated vandalism targeting a Jewish institution, a Jewish-owned business & now a private Jewish home are heinous acts of antisemitism intended to terrorize metro-Detroit’s Jewish community. Law enforcement must escalate its investigations to bring these vandals to justice.

Israel is experiencing its own 9/11. There is no both sides to this attack. Hamas is a terrorist group mass murdering hundreds of innocent Israelis and taking women and children hostage. The U.S. must stand ready to provide Israel with the support it needs to defend itself including humanitarian aid and funding for the Iron Dome.

Today, we remember the 2,977 precious lives stolen from us on 9/11 and reflect on all that was lost in the fire and ash that September morning. The American story itself changed on this day 22 years ago. But what could not — and will not — change is the character of this nation.

Today we honor the memory of all the brave souls we lost 22 years ago. May we always remember their stories, the courage of our first responders, and the sacrifices our troops made to protect us in the years that followed.

This Senate hearing is 50 yrs in the making, when #LGBTQ Michiganders first sought to include discrimination protections in Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. We must finally amend the act. We’re not asking for more than anyone else but we cannot accept less than equal protection.
