I’m gobsmacked by today. One of the ways persons who work in mental health protect patients is by restricting their internet access when they are too unwell to make good decisions for themselves and might post things online that they forever regret. (Eg things that might ruin their reputation.) And yet hundreds of people have been making a mentally ill man go viral for outrage clicks. Argue all you want, unfollow me. I don’t care. It’s obvious to me that this person was in a mental health crisis. I’m absolutely disgusted by what I saw today. I would bet everything I own that this man’s family is reeling and devastated to see their unwell loved one being used in this manner. It’s also possible that this man will receive some kind of treatment, regret some or all of what he said when he was unwell—and then have to deal with long term consequences of going viral today. Yes he said some things that make sense, as many unwell persons do. Yes he’s educated and smart—as many unwell persons are. Between salient points, he also named a new theory of gravity after himself. And tried to warn us all that the government is building a new type of bomb behind our backs. I’m done arguing with tinfoil hat idiots in my replies. I’ve spent more than a decade in acute psychiatry. It’s clear that many people are totally ignorant about mental illness and treatment, and have lost the ability to see nuance or to look past their reactionary outage. I have no respect for the “influencers” who’ve used an unwell man as internet fodder.
