This conversation is new. There has always been a subset of older Final Fantasy fans who were mad about how the series progressed.
FFVII shaped the landscape of storytelling in gaming, but SNES era gamers were skeptical out the gate about the direction it went.

Modern Final Fantasy isn't held to the standard of being a "good game". It's held to the standard of making people feel the way they did when they were 13 years old playing their favorite Final Fantasy. That's an impossible assignment.

This guys are sick if you think the re-releases are any substitute for the original FF7. I've heard it all: Original Japanese doesn't matter. The remakes don't exist. Advent Children isn't canon.
I was THERE, son. Bought a used original copy, September 1997. Disks scratched to hell, before I even owned a Playstation. The jewel case sat there, begging me to play it. I flipped through the instruction manual for days like a sacred tome. I wondered if I could skip ahead in the story by putting in Disk 2 first.
Her name is, and always will be, Aeris.

FFXI is the best mainline Final Fantasy game, yes, ahead of XIV, VII, and my personal favorite, VI.

@Ingridpilled James Bond Goldeneye. Sex scene with Xenia Onatopp establish how she kills, and setting up access for the villains to set their plan to steal the Goldeneye Satellite weapon in motion.

@Actually_Tina What's great is that the MMOs were HIS idea even, though he didn't participate in their direct development. He did insist XI be a mainline title, and that MMOs were a sure thing for the future.
And in seeding XI, he also seeded XIV. They're like his grandkids.

That being said ignoring the MMOs because they arent "traditional FF games" is a mistake. They are mainline games and some of the best FF games. They just arent single player turn based games

I feel like 5 years ago I'd have had this opinion. Unfortunately Shadowbringers and Endwalker exist and reinvigorated me on FF. Its even made me look back more fondly on XV and XVI still hits good.
The series is fine but the period right after he left was a bit dicey

Final Fantasy died when Sakaguchi left Square in 2003. We are just communing with a zombie version of the franchise and are in deep denial. The only FF's that matter are remakes or sequels of HIS titles.

@TheCartelDel He stepped down out of shame for Spirits Within bombing.
However, in the late 90s he seeded the idea for Final Fantasy MMOs, which directly lead to the combination of 4 teams, and the creation of FFXI.
While he had no direct hand in its creation, it was his idea.
And it lives on!

@Actually_Tina Like any artist they are hit and miss. The older he's gotten, the more they've missed. Kefka was first drawn by Amano, all after is derivative.
People change. He's gone in an artsy fartsy direction, whether you like it or not.
The actions of his actual character say otherwise.

Nomura designs are fire and he's done a good job maintaining Kefka's designs since Dissidia.
Post 2010 Nomura is just the same old Nomura he always has been.
Also he's a mage. He'd use a staff if it suited him.
