It just feels so painfully obvious that the 14th amendment does not mean that a 9-months pregnant woman from Mexico can cross the Rio Grande illegally, give birth, and be allowed to stay because her child is now a natural born citizen.

If you really hate birthright citizenship, propose a new amendment to clarify that the 14th amendment applies only to the children of mothers here legally with the intention of long-term residence. I don’t know if that passes, but it absolutely has very real support.

Also for the record, the actual intent of the 14th Amendment was to grant citizenship to black slaves and their descendants and to protect their rights, not to automatically grant citizenship to the “anchor babies” of invaders from Mexico.
