#Syria: CPJ calls on Syrian authorities to clarify the fate and whereabouts of German journalist Eva Maria Michelmann and Kurdish-Turkish journalist Ahmed Polad, whom their outlets and relatives say have not been heard from since January 18, when the northeastern Syrian city of Raqqa fell to government forces in an offensive against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. cpj.org/2026/03/german…

Have been too shattered to write this but for the sake of clarity — I have also been laid off by the Post. I was one of the few journalists still working inside Russia. My last story went on the front page and featured rare testimonies from wounded soldiers criticizing the war.

I have been laid off today from the @washingtonpost, along with most of the International staff and so many other wonderful colleagues. I’m heartbroken for our newsroom and especially for the peerless journalists who served the Post internationally — editors and correspondents who have been my friends and collaborators for almost 12 years. It’s been an honor to work with them. I launched the WorldView column in January 2017 to help readers better understand the world and America’s place in it and I’m grateful for the half a million loyal subscribers who tuned into the column several times a week over the years.

Feel so incredibly privileged to have spent 13 years as a foreign correspondent at the Washington Post. What a wild run: Lebanon, Iraq, Jerusalem and Berlin and so much more. Thank you to everyone that trusted me to tell their stories.

BREAKING: A ceasefire has been agreed between the Syrian government and the YPG/SDF as part of a comprehensive deal that includes the gradual integration of military and administrative bodies. The agreement provides for the withdrawal of forces from front lines, the deployment of Interior Ministry security forces in Hasakah and Qamishli, and the integration of YPG/SDF units into the Syrian army structure. It also includes merging the Autonomous Administration’s institutions into state institutions, guaranteeing Kurdish civil and educational rights, and ensuring the return of displaced persons. The deal aims to unify Syrian territory, enforce the law, and support national reconstruction. Source: SANA

#AlHol #Hasakah IS supporters are claiming that a number of women and their families, including foreign women, have escaped al-Hol camp in north-eastern Syria, and are urging sympathisers to travel to the area to assist with transport and shelter. Some supporters have circulated specific instructions on how to assist escapees. They have stressed the urgency of mobilising to help women near al-Hol, as well as around other facilities holding IS-linked detainees, such as Ghuwayran prison in Hasaka. Supporters have framed the latest clashes between government forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as a “major opportunity” for IS operatives and sympathisers to exploit, including to facilitate jail breaks or transfer escapees, amid what they describe as a chaotic transition and changes in prison administration

There’s a lot of disinformation being pumped out about what’s happening in north east Syria right now but what is fact is the Kurdish population is terrified (with reason) as too the Yazidis about ISIS prisoners and loyalists being freed from prisons and on the loose

Turkish security sources described the recent agreement between Syria and Kurdish forces as a historic turning point, following days of clashes that ended with Damascus regaining control over key territories, including oil fields. The sources noted that Ankara’s intelligence played a role in preventing further escalation and emphasized that efforts to combat Islamic State will continue, while stability in Syria remains a priority for Turkey’s security strategy.
