@RaymondDoerr The gas tax taxes you on the amount of gas you use, which correlates strongly with the number of miles you drive. The EV tax should do the same, which means they should be reading your odometer. They should not be pulling a random number out of their backsides. Grr.

@cliffski @lukos86 Wait. So the “game ready” driver is inferior to some other kind of driver? It glitchy somehow? I’d like the other kind please!

I’ll let Vincenzo say what I’ve been struggling all morning to express. Were it not for him, the show would never have happened.
Vincenzo Natali@Vincenzo_Natali

My thanks to everyone who has expressed support for The Peripheral after its cancelation. It was a joy to be a part of. I was surrounded by extraordinary artists throughout, beginning with @GreatDismal, whose book started it all. Our show lives on in some other lucky stub.

@RaymondDoerr Yep. Introversion software did a fun YouTube video on this a few years back. They opted for green I think.

Changelog: - Medkits "+" symbol is now magenta-purple to avoid asshole lawyers with too much time on their hands going after an innocent #gamedev to protect a nonprofit that shouldn't care about these things.

@StevenBrust Where I’m from, the second ‘g’ in garage sounds like the ‘z’s in Zsa Zsa Gabor. ZSIF. I like it.

Just cleaning and deleting hard drives and found this low key photobomb to add to the @shapeshiftFMV collection - I’m a sucker for a mirror shot!

🥳 🍿 Be one of the first people in 40+ years to see this freshly-scanned film (in 4K) about the PM-1 military microreactor that provided a remote radar station near Sundance, WY with heat and 1 MWe of electricity in 1962. whatisnuclear.com/news/2023-07-0…

@cliffski For me, forums are about searching more than talking. Search frequency could be considered.

@Ostralopithycus Nope, never had any serious interest. Except from a friend who has an indy film company, @ZombieOrpheus, but that didn't manage to generate enough of a response to make it reasonable to pursue it.

What's the earliest depiction of nuclear waste as green ooze in a drum in pop culture that you can think of?

@DavidBrin It’s funny. Republicans care about fiscal responsibility, but only when they are not in the White House. They end up contributing to the Democrat’s good showing.

Among my predictions - e.g. the AI crisis - most accurate was US deficits. Debt ALWAYS skyrockets under Repubs & always goes under control when dems are in power. Always. See my 2021 forecast in the figure. The 2023 situation came exactly true.

This new trend where NLP rediscovers HCI without saying “HCI” is pretty funny

@WalterBright Nostalgia: in the mid-late ‘80s, I was a grad student at UW. My housemates and I had been playing Empire on the VAX at school and heard you’d been working on a multiplayer version. A couple of us showed up at your door and bought a copy of what you had. We played it for years!

Found a long-lost box of about 30 zip disks in the basement. Haven't seen it in 23 years. Found the drive for it, and have been copying the files off of it. It's an interesting (for me anyway) time capsule of what I was working on at the time. It includes the original document describing what #dlang would be. It's great that the drive and the disks still work fine!

The Dragon Book set back compiler classes around the world by like 25 years. But the fact that CS professors did not know better is far more damning.

@ziontree Organic. Oh, I mean the tea bag. Goes in the compost. The staple will rust over time. No one wants paper made of recycled tea :)

Is there a German word for when you spend a few minutes considering how to recycle a tea bag when meanwhile the country just closed nuclear reactors losing 32.7bn kilowatt hrs of low-carbon electricity which supplied over 10 million German homes & saved 30 million tons CO2 a year
