As a paediatrician and a mother, I have seen firsthand the profound difference nurses and midwives make in the lives of children, families and communities. As we mark International Nurses Day and International Day of the Midwife, we reaffirm a simple truth: there can be no resilient health system without them. Across the Eastern Mediterranean Region, nurses and midwives continue to serve communities with courage, compassion and unwavering commitment, whether in hospitals, clinics and communities, or on the frontlines of emergencies and conflicts. This is why investing in a resilient health workforce is one of @WHOEMRO’s flagship initiatives. We must do more to invest in, empower and protect nurses and midwives, while creating pathways for the next generation of health leaders. Honoured to join colleagues, young professionals and partners from across the Region for the webinar marking #IND2026 and #IDM2026. I deeply appreciated the inspiring message from HRH Princess Muna Al-Hussein of Jordan, @WHO Patron of Nursing and Midwifery, whose leadership continues to champion the nursing and midwifery workforce. Together, we must ensure nurses and midwives are supported, valued and equipped to shape the future of health for all.

ما هي اللقاحات الموصى بها لجميع المسافرين؟ #الصحة_للجميع #حج2026

تُذكّرنا أحداثٌ مثل #فيروس_هانتا بأن الاستثمار في القدرات الأساسية، التي تتطلبها اللوائح الصحية الدولية، هو ركيزتنا المشتركة لتحقيق الأمن الصحي العالمي.  وتحدّد هذه القواعد ما يلزم من كل دولة من الدول الأعضاء قانونيا بشكل واضح ودقيق، ومن ذلك أن تلتزم الدول بأن: 1️⃣ تبني نظم ترصُّد قادرة على الاكتشاف السريع للأحداث الصحية غير المعتادة وتقييمها، ولا سيما نقاط الدخول. 2️⃣ تشيد نُظُم نقاط دخول مهيأة وقادرة على الصمود، الأمر الذي يمكّنها من اكتشاف مخاطر الصحة العامة وتقييمها والاستجابة لها، مع الحفاظ على مأمونية السفر والتجارة الدوليين. 3️⃣ تُعِدَّ آليات قوية لمراكز الاتصال الوطنية المعنية باللوائح الصحية الدولية، لضمان إبلاغ منظمة الصحة العالمية في الوقت المناسب بجميع الأحداث الصحية العامة غير المعتادة أو غير المتوقعة. 4️⃣ تبني قدرات استجابة تمكّن من التنفيذ السريع لتدابير الصحة العامة، وخاصة الفحوص المختبرية، وعزل الحالات، وتتبع المخالطين، والوقاية من العدوى ومكافحتها، والعمل المُنسق المتعدد القطاعات.  5️⃣ تُجهّز قدرات التواصل بشأن المخاطر، والمشاركة المجتمعية، وإدارة الأوبئة المعلوماتية، لضمان وصول المعلومات الموثوقة إلى الناس بسرعة، والتصدي للمعلومات المغلوطة، واعتماد السلوكيات الوقائية عند الحاجة. وأما بالنسبة إلى فيروس هانتا الحالي، فلم يجرِ الإبلاغ عن أي حالات مشتبه فيها أو مؤكدة في بلدان إقليم شرق المتوسط إلى الآن. وتقيّم منظمة الصحة العالمية المخاطر العالمية في هذا الصدد بأنها منخفضة. واستنادًا إلى المعلومات المتاحة حاليًا، لا توصي المنظمة بفرض أي قيود على السفر أو التجارة.

Events like #hantavirus serve as a reminder that investing in core capacities under the International Health Regulations is our collective foundation for global health security. These legally binding rules set out exactly what is required of every Member State: 1️⃣ Surveillance systems capable of rapidly detecting and assessing unusual health events, including at points of entry. 2️⃣ Prepared and resilient points of entry systems capable of detecting, assessing and responding to public health risks while maintaining safe international travel and trade. 3️⃣ Strong national IHR focal point mechanisms to ensure timely reporting of any unusual or unexpected public health events to WHO. 4️⃣ Response capacities capable of rapidly implementing public health measures, including laboratory testing, case isolation, contact tracing, infection prevention and control, and coordinated multisectoral action. 5️⃣ Risk Communication, Community Engagement and Infodemic Management capacities to ensure trusted information reaches people quickly, misinformation is addressed, and protective behaviours adopted as needed. No suspected or confirmed cases have been reported in countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region. @WHO assesses the global risk as low and advises against the application of any travel or trade restrictions based on the current information available.
