Our latest @WHOEMRO situation report on conflict in the Middle East shows a worsening health situation in parts of the Region, with broader strain across countries. @WHO is supporting national responses to sustain essential health services and deliver critical supplies, including an emergency shipment to Lebanon just yesterday with support from @eu_echo. This Eid comes at a difficult time for many across the Eastern Mediterranean Region. My thoughts are with all those facing conflict, displacement and hardship. May this blessed occasion bring peace, health and hope. My deep gratitude to the health workers serving communities under the most challenging circumstances. Eid Mubarak.

In my conversation with @TelGlobalHealth and @PaulNuki, we reflected on a simple truth: our Region needs the pill of peace to heal, thrive and prosper. Conflict is straining already fragile health systems and taking a heavy toll on people’s mental health. I am deeply grateful to the teams supporting people on the ground, despite all challenges. I appreciate the leadership of @MoPH_afg in driving a coordinated, whole-of-government effort to #EndPolio. This kind of alignment is critical to reaching missed children, improving campaign quality and sustaining progress. Continued national and global commitment will be essential to finish the job.

Grateful to #France for its generous donation of essential medicines, which landed today in Al-Arish, #Egypt, via the EU Humanitarian Air Bridge, with support from @EU_ECHO. These supplies will support treatment for around 30,000 patients in #Gaza, including cancer patients and people with other chronic diseases. @WHO and our partners are doing everything we can to help move life-saving medicines to patients who urgently depend on them. However, with most crossings into #Gaza still closed, humanitarian deliveries remain restricted. Meanwhile, half of Gaza’s hospitals are nonfunctional, essential medicines are running low, and health services remain under immense strain. WHO calls for predictable and sustained entry of medical supplies and fuel through all available crossings into Gaza to ensure lifesaving care can continue.

I am deeply alarmed by reports of an attack on the Omid Drug Rehabilitation Facility in #Kabul, with more than 400 people reportedly killed and hundreds more injured. During my multiple visits to #Afghanistan, I met people in centres like this, often among the most vulnerable, seeking support and treatment. They are individuals in need of health services and must never be exposed to harm. Facilities providing care for substance use disorders are an essential part of the health system and must be protected, like all health services. Health care is not a target. All facilities, health workers and patients must be protected, without exception.

.@WHO has released US$2 million from our Contingency Fund for Emergencies to support urgent health responses in #Lebanon, #Iraq and #Syria. At a time of growing needs and limited resources, this rapid funding demonstrates WHO’s commitment to sustaining emergency care, essential medicines and supplies, and disease surveillance as the crisis places growing pressure on health systems. CFE funding will also be made available to support targeted, priority health interventions in Iran in response to the current conflict, should WHO support be requested. @UN l @UNarabic l @WHOEMRO l @WHO 🔗 emro.who.int/media/news/who…

Health systems cannot function under fire. In #Lebanon, escalating violence, attacks on health care and rising casualties are placing enormous pressure on hospitals and health workers already operating in extremely challenging conditions. Protecting health care is a legal and moral obligation.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus@DrTedros

The killings in the last 24 hours of 14 health workers in southern #Lebanon mark a tragic development in the escalating Middle East crisis. @WHO has confirmed that 12 doctors, paramedics and nurses were killed in a strike late last night on the Bourj Qalaouiyeh primary healthcare center. Just hours earlier, two paramedics lost their lives in attacks on a health facility in Al Sowana. These incidents highlight the ongoing assault on Lebanon’s healthcare system, which is crucial for the populations it serves. Since March 2, WHO has verified 27 attacks on healthcare in Lebanon, resulting in 30 deaths and 35 injuries, including the horrifying events of Friday. WHO condemns this tragic loss of life and emphasizes that health workers must always be protected. According to international humanitarian law, medical personnel and facilities should never be attacked or militarized. The intensification of conflict in Lebanon and the broader Middle East increases the likelihood of such tragedies. Urgent action is required to de-escalate the crisis and protect the health of people throughout the region.

As conflict escalates across the Middle East, the public health consequences are growing: injuries, displacement, disrupted health services and rising risks of disease outbreaks. Our first regional situation report outlines the evolving health impact and @WHO’s response. emro.who.int/images/stories…

Thank you @TheLancet and Richard Horton for highlighting @WHO’s concerns about the escalating health impacts of conflict across the Middle East. The situation continues to evolve, with figures of casualties, displacement and health system impact changing by the minute. Beyond the immediate toll, the crisis is disrupting health services and compounding environmental and public health risks across multiple countries. Protecting civilians, health workers and health facilities is not optional; it is an obligation under international humanitarian law. I encourage everyone to read the piece: thelancet.com/journals/lance…

أدعوكم لقراءة المقال كاملاً: independentarabia.com/node/644311

It was a pleasure to participate earlier this week in a virtual webinar organized by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative recognizing the critical role women play in eradication efforts. As a Gender Champion for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, I underscored how women power the fight to end polio — from labs to the frontlines of vaccination. As we enter the final stretch to #EndPolio, I call on partners, decision-makers and the global polio workforce to do all they can to remove barriers, invest in safe and equitable workplaces and strengthen women’s leadership. Empowering women isn’t optional — it’s how we will finish the job. @GatesMiddleEast | @EndPolioNow | @UNICEF | @Rotary | @gatesfoundation | @Gavi | @CDCgov

Thank you @AlMajallaEN for publishing my latest commentary. In the Eastern Mediterranean Region, too many well-intentioned efforts still happen side by side, but not together. The result: duplication in some places and dangerous gaps in others that fragile health systems cannot afford. Working with countries, UN agencies and partners, @WHO is helping strengthen regional coordination that is already delivering results. Expanding this cooperation is key to accelerating health progress across the Region and beyond. Read more: en.majalla.com/node/329944/

I’m delighted to welcome Dr Jamal Ahmed @jGuudle as Director of Polio Eradication and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases at @WHOEMRO. With nearly two decades of experience advancing polio eradication and strengthening disease surveillance across the Middle East and Africa, his leadership comes at a critical moment for the Eastern Mediterranean Region, as we push through the last mile to #EndPolio and accelerate efforts to protect communities from vaccine-preventable diseases. Looking forward to working closely together to protect every child from polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases. @DrTedros | @GatesMiddleEast | @EndPolioNow | @UNICEF | @Rotary | @gatesfoundation | @Gavi
