Deeply saddened by the killing of journalist Amal Khalil in south #Lebanon Journalists are civilians & must be protected. Targeting civilians & obstructing aid are grave IHL violations. This must stop. Sincere condolences to her family & wishing the injured a speedy recovery

Today, April 18, WHO delivered critical trauma supplies and essential medicines to Nabatieh in south Lebanon, reinforcing hospitals’ capacity to save lives. This was made possible with support from @eu_echo. Amid a fragile ceasefire, @WHO remains steadfast, supporting frontline health workers and communities in the south as displaced families begin returning, and helping hospitals continue to function under immense pressure. Since 2 March, 100 health workers have been killed and 233 injured in Lebanon, an unacceptable toll. Six hospitals in the south and southern Beirut suburbs are now fully closed, with 15 more partially damaged. Our work does not pause. From sustaining emergency care to delivering essential medicines where they are needed most, WHO continues to support the response on the ground. The situation in #Lebanon remains extremely volatile. Access to health care must be ensured, and health workers, patients and facilities must be protected at all times. @ECHO_MiddleEast @EUinLebanon

I welcome news of the 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon, an important step to protect lives and ease pressure on the health system. But this week’s regional situation report shows how strained the country’s health system remains: hospitals are at near full capacity, and shortages of essential medicines are affecting patient care. We thank Member States for their continued support, including @qatar_fund and @MOI_QatarEn who recently delivered urgently needed health supplies to #Lebanon. As @WHO continues to support the response in the most affected countries, we have also deployed emergency expertise to support GCC countries in strengthening coordination and readiness. People in our region need peace. And even in war, health care must be protected, and access to care must be sustained. Read the latest situation report: 🔗 emro.who.int/images/stories…

At its peak, the shelter hosted 338 people—now fewer than 100 remain, with many preparing to return home. Conditions have been generally adequate, though some challenges persist. For many, going home is not the end of displacement—just the next step. @WHOEMRO

A WHO team visited a shelter in Chhim hosting families displaced by recent violence—just as many begin returning home following the ceasefire. They shared appreciation for the support received, including health care, food & water. Free weekly clinics have been a key lifeline.

#Lebanon’s Tebnine Government Hospital, one of the busiest trauma management hospitals in the south, was damaged due to two consecutive strikes closeby on 12 and 14 April. 11 workers were injured and the emergency department, including critical equipment such as ventilators, monitors, stretchers and trolleys, were damaged. The pharmacy and out-patient clinics were also damaged. @WHO is supporting urgent emergency maintenance based on priority needs, while hospital services continue to function despite the strain. Since the start of the war, @WHO has recorded 133 attacks on health care with 88 deaths and 206 injuries. Fifteen hospitals and 7 primary healthcare centres have been damaged, and 5 hospitals and 56 primary health care centres have closed.   Humanitarian access to southern Lebanon has been severely constrained, hindering support to health facilities and limiting people’s access to essential care. I reiterate the call for the immediate protection of health care facilities, health workers, ambulances, and patients. There must be safe, sustained, and unhindered humanitarian access across Lebanon, so that life-saving services can be delivered without delay and without risk to those providing or receiving care.
