.@timhwang, General Counsel, Foundation for American Innovation, on what exactly AI is: "It's all based on ultimately a pattern matching technology which basically says: if you give the computer enough examples and you give it feedback, it can sort of learn to solve the problem on its own, without us explicitly programming it with rules."

Indeed. The surface deal takes a small but meaningful step toward constraining the scope of the NHPA. Much more to do including reforming the listing regime & judicial review.

Permitting reform light? Took a look at some of the NEPA/NHPA streamlining provisions tucked inside the House’s highway bill. We also dive into EV fees, climate rollbacks. W/@andpicon subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2026/0…

AI alignment. Content moderation. Digital competition. We talk like these are new problems. But academic pioneers worked through it all 70 years ago. We just stopped citing them. It's cybernetics all the way down. New for @JoinFAI in The Ansible: ansible.pub/p/its-cybernet…

I could give you a tantalizing teaser of what I say at 25:50. But I won't.
Tim Hwang@timhwang

The inimitable @nukebarbarian is on @JoinFAI's the Frontier today to talk about big changes at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, SMRs, and the challenges that lie ahead. Bonus: stay until 25:50 to hear Emmet give the most poignant defense of US nuclear heritage I've ever heard.

I don’t love the fact that AI risks have reached the point where the state’s involvement is inevitable. I wish that weren’t our reality. But it is. Our proposal is a light touch path forward, intended to be minimum-viable for the task.

The days of the cheap laptop may be over. For three years, Washington has focused on logic. Memory barely came up. Now memory prices are about to jump 130%, taking consumer prices with them. Read more in today's edition of The Ansible: ansible.pub/p/youre-worrie…

.@deanwball's biggest fear with AI is that we don't have the civilizational youth anymore to ensure a technological revolution.  "In the early days of this country, like the late 18th century, very early 19th century, basically all novel land uses in America were illegal by default." "You had to use land for its natural purpose, which in practice meant like whatever it was being used for... and that was fine because like for many hundreds of years, we didn't have that many like truly novel uses of land." "All of a sudden in like 1800, it's like turnpikes, canals, eventually railroads, mills, and there's all this explosion of activity that's going on, and we're building a new country." "So we've done these kinds of institutional rearchitectures before."  "Maybe actually my single biggest fear with AI is that we just don't have the sort of civilizational youth anymore to, like, do it."

We asked @deanwball: when it comes to robotics in the US, do subsidies make sense?  "I think the very pro-social correct way to subsidize, [and] one of the things about the Big Beautiful Bill from last year that I really applauded, was the full same-year tax deductibility of research and development expenses for businesses." "I think we've got the ingredients here, the other big one being industrial policy." "If the government, especially the military, if it finds utility in these things... if it's smart, it can, it can subsidize drone factories and sort of pull that future forward quite well." "I don't think we need any new legal authority. We have a lot of money...  it's mostly about, can you pick the right things? Can you make the right bets?"
