Across the Middle East, health needs are outpacing available resources. Health systems are absorbing rising trauma caseloads while trying to sustain essential services under severe operational constraints, including disrupted supply chains, overstretched facilities, and increasing risks of disease outbreaks. @WHO has launched a US$30.3M appeal to sustain trauma and critical care, maintain essential health services, strengthen early warning and outbreak response, and secure the supply chains needed to keep care running in the most affected countries. I am heartened to see how timely, flexible funding is helping save lives in Yemen every day. Through @WHO’s Contingency Fund for Emergencies, over 200 000 people accessed critical care, more than 2000 life-saving surgeries were performed, and hospitals continued to function under immense strain. But the need is growing as crises deepen and gaps persist. Our 2026 health emergency appeal for the Eastern Mediterranean Region is only 37% funded. في اليوم العالمي لمكافحة السُّل، أفكر في الأُسَر التي تُعبِّر عنها الأرقام: فكل 34 ثانية، يُصاب شخصٌ في إقليم منظمة الصحة العالمية لشرق المتوسط بمرض السل، وكل 6 دقائق نفقد حياة إنسان بسبب هذا المرض. وهناك الكثير ممن يُشَخَّصون في مرحلة متأخرة أو لا يُشَخَّصون على الإطلاق. ولكن ثمة تقدمٍ مُحرَز: فقد شُخِّص 2.8 مليون شخص وبدأ علاجهم في الفترة من 2020 إلى 2024، وعولج أكثر من 90% منهم بنجاح. غير أن هذا التقدم هشٌّ، وبدون الاستثمار المستدام والمساءلة، يمكن أن تُهدَر المكاسب المُحققة بسرعة. لقد حان وقت العمل. نعم، يمكننا القضاء على السل.

On #WorldTBDay, I think of the families behind the numbers: every 34 seconds someone in the @WHOEMRO Region falls ill with tuberculosis, and every 6 minutes a life is lost. Too many are also diagnosed late or not at all. But progress has been made: 2.8 million people were diagnosed and started treatment between 2020 and 2024, with over 90% successfully treated. This progress is fragile, however, and without sustained investment and accountability, gains can quickly be lost. The time to act is now. Yes, we can #EndTB.

It’s #WorldWaterDay2026 No one should fall ill for lack of access to safe water. 🏠1 in 3 households lack safe water, sanitation and hygiene. This causes: 🔵131 000 deaths each year from diarrhoea, including the death of 37 000 children under 5 🔵higher risks of preventable diseases such as cholera, hepatitis A and polio 🏥1 in 4 health facilities lack basic water services. This means health workers are unable to apply essential hand hygiene and infection prevention and control practices placing millions at risk. Access to adequate and safe sanitation services is essential for women and girls to ensure proper menstrual hygiene management, protect their dignity and maintain their safety. We need to address gender inequalities to accelerate progress on water, sanitation and hygiene. Where water flows, equality grows.
