Often, you can't really blame people for focusing on their own survival and concerns. For many, they have little time for anything else.
But it does mean that to reach people in a conversation about global warming, you often need to make it personal. How will it affect them?

Many people think they personally have little or no risk from global warming, and to the extent they do recognize risks to other people or ecosystems, they just don't care.
Life is hard, and people often cope by focusing on their own immediate needs to the exclusion of all else.
