@JonahDispatch Taxes on property go back a thousand years in England. As far as I know, there have never been taxes based on aesthetic objections. In my view, the case for a tax on property is heightened when it reaches this level.

@WIBruin Serious answer: Not really. What someone does with their money? Sometimes, sure. Serious question: Do you think distastefulness and obnoxiousness are proper grounds for tax policy? If so does it only apply to wealth, or can we use aesthetic objections in other areas of life too?

So if Musk is “hoarding” money, what would it mean if/when the stock price goes down? The selling window doesn’t start to open until August. So if by then the price drops 25% did he give back that money to everyone else? If he hoarded it, that must mean when he loses it, it goes somewhere. Or maybe they think he’s hoarding naturally occurring electric cars and rockets? Or maybe none of these people understand how wealth creation works.

@hiattb I can see how you can argue over whether Dylan has a good singing voice or not. That’s a matter of taste. I don’t see how you can argue that his voice has hampered his commercial success. That’s seems clear.

Look at this video of NYC in 1975, see how peaceful it was? Look at how everybody seems to be enjoying their lives, and not contrast it to today. Our country has been ruined.

Do you have stuff your parents or grandparents said when you were growing up that managed to stick in your mind to this day and makes you chuckle when you think about them? I do, so I'll start: My Mother, if she disliked someone or something: "Stinks on Ice" My Grandmother, to my Step-Grandfather if he pissed her off:"Oh go shit in your hat, Gil"

The decimation of American inner cities and other communities due to companies moving production elsewhere is being forgotten in the tariff discussion. All focus is on the short term, not the long term goal (lots of pain to get there but lots of pain from those losses.) I’ve been to Flint, Michigan. I stood at the concrete scar of the old Buick factory that once employed so many including a thriving black middle class. It was a concrete wasteland and the neighborhoods around it, businesses and homes, looked like a nuclear bomb hit them. Block after block of foreclosed homes. Talked to an elderly African American woman living on a block of foreclosed homes with sagging roof-in a home she couldn’t afford to leave, on a street her neighbors had fled. Her husband used to work there until Buick left - in part for China. This kind of story is being left out of the tariff discussion.
Wisconsin Right Now@wisconsin_now

This is the game plan behind the tariffs. To change the financial calculus for companies so it’s more financially advantageous for them to make their products here. Trump needs to do a better job of clearly and cleanly explaining the why to the American people and the long game he’s playing here. The loss of manufacturing etc has decimated American urban areas and some small towns. Ie the forgotten men of 2016

Rich people have people who manage their money and can move it into safer asset classes, they can do a flight to safety. They don't have 401ks. Middle-class and working people are far more "exposed" to the stock market because their pensions and jobs are not "liquid'

Leave VP Vance’s kids alone. A goal of dissent to Trump-Vance’s Russian should be to shine a bright light on the terror created by Putin for Ukrainian children and their parents in Russian-occupied Ukraine and free Ukraine. Making the child of a leader here you disagree with, however passionately, uncomfortable is wrong.
JD Vance@JDVance

Today while walking my 3 year old daughter a group of “Slava Ukraini” protesters followed us around and shouted as my daughter grew increasingly anxious and scared. I decided to speak with the protesters in the hopes that I could trade a few minutes of conversation for them leaving my toddler alone. (Nearly all of them agreed.) It was a mostly respectful conversation, but if you’re chasing a 3-year-old as part of a political protest, you’re a shit person.

As usual, @ejdionne is right. Painfully right. The Biden brian trust needs to read this and heed this. This is one of those knee-jerk calls for Biden to drop out, from those who have no clue how divisive or chaotic an open convention would be. EJ has full sympathy for Biden and what he has accomplished. But there is an urgent need for reassurance that comes from extended interviews, including at least one with somebody more hostel to him, and that has to be done soon.

It’s odd trying to make sense of the 1980s economy: Household income growth was extremely robust despite dismal wage performance because women’s labor force participation rose very rapidly, which was somehow a huge conservative policy win?
