On this day in 1838, Bendigo faced ‘Big Ben’ Caunt for the second time at Skipwith Common near Selby. Bendigo’s spiked boots went missing. He was way ahead but the replacement shoes caused him to slip. The inexperienced referee deemed it a foul and Caunt was declared the winner.

Bendigo gets a mention on the sign to the Sunrise Hill Nature Reserve in Nottingham's Bestwood Estate. It is still known locally as 'Bendigo's Ring'. The contour and slope of the land shows why it was chosen, as it gave spectators a good viewing point. #boxing #sportinghistory
