This is absolutely insane - This American borrowed $96,000 in student loans for a bachelors degree - She’s already paid back $165,356 - She still owes $220,810.73 Again, she only borrowed $96,000 “I have paid almost double what I even borrowed in the first place, and I owe so much money. I am running backwards at this point” How is this legal? This is such a scam. This is why students can’t pay off their loans, the terms are beyond predatory

ALL student loans come with an education on the loans and how they work. Within a day after getting your check - interest starts. You can - and many do - make interest only payments while you are in school. But because they are student loans they give you a very long grace period. Your college years plus often 2 more. Interest accrues that entire time. You are told this upfront. Sorry - but not sorry. You were warned.

I find it humorous that you don't care about human lives to make a political point. Measuring murder based on % is comical. Yes there are red counties with higher murder "rates". But the fact remains that the volume of murders is still the only number that counts. The "per 100k" numbers make for good politics, but when 41 people are killed in one month in one city. It is a lot. Finally, if you isolate the areas that 34 of the 41 died in, the murder rate per 100k in those areas jumps to 75 TIMES the actual rate in the rest of the city.

There are 89 red counties with a higher homicide rate than Chicago.

Are you people stupid? She made no payments for maybe 4 or 5 years possibly 6 while in school. Interest accrues during that time. She knew that when she signed. She had the option of making interest payments while she was in school, CHOSE not to. It was allowed, so no big deal. But now she is catching up. It is explained when you sign the loans.

American logs into her federal student aid account so we can see her actual loans and payments - She took out a $49,548.74 loan - She’s made 120 payments, paying $25,558.36 - Her current balance is $50,121.33 So after paying $25,558.36, she now owes more than she took out “It's all such a scam”

Older generations say “we all struggled in our 20s.” No, you didn’t. You didn’t pay $3200 for rent and $10 for eggs. You didn’t graduate into $50K student debt and $0 job security. Gen Z isn’t dramatic. They’re drowning.

You are so delusional. Struggling in your 20s is part of life. You don't get to suckle on the teat of your parents for 22-24 years and then instantly get to live the good life off of a college degree and great party stories. You get to embrace the exhausting nature of being a grown up for the next 50 years. All while carving out some enjoyment from the VERY FEW THINGS that fit into the timeframe not spent creating resources to enjoy those things. It makes perfect sense. Your expectations are off. Had the borrower started making payments the first month after taking the loan, your argument is solid. Student loans accrue interest while you are in school. So for 4, 5 or maybe 6 years you paid nothing while the debt grew. Thus even if you had been paying for 10 years AFTER the 4-6 year grace period, your debt is on the balance when you started paying.

American takes out a student loan for $8,645. After years of payments, he’s paid $7,450. His current balance? $8,750. He pays $7,450 — and somehow owes MORE than the original loan. This is usury, and it should be illegal
