This girl is cruising down the highway in her stick shift, windows down, wind in her hair, belting out songs while she shifts gears without missing a beat. She looks genuinely happy and in control. Most people these days never learn how to drive manual. It takes real timing and coordination to get the clutch and gas right, especially when you’re just trying to have fun and sing along. Cannot believe the France vs Spain semifinal is 3pm on a Tuesday. A weekday afternoon. North America is hosting this World Cup. Put the final at 3pm Saturday... fine... it's the weekend. But scheduling a semi at 3pm on a workday to cater to Europe while North Americans get shafted is a joke. And before anyone says a lot of the tournament games have been in the afternoon, that is not the point. This is a HUGE semifinal. When you host, the marquee games go in your prime time. That is how the Olympics work, that is how past World Cups have worked. The host market gets the showcase window. North America is hosting and got skipped for a weekday matinee. What is even the point of hosting?

20 years ago I wrote about how India should consider giving citizenship to emerging football stars from Africa. This would help strengthen our chances of qualifying for the World Cup and generally improving our standing in the football world. 20 years later we have not improved one bit. Really my only complaint about the World Cup, and soccer in general, is that some of these important matches get decided by penalty kicks. Is there not a better way to decide who wins than something that is pretty much almost just a crapshoot guess about which way the ball is gonna go? I’m thinking some form of double overtime that tilts the offense/defense balance to encourage a winning goal, such that the deciding play is still scored by live action instead of a static play.
