You want to gift a property to a family member? Please… don’t sell it for $1. Gift it for nothing. Or sell it at fair market value. Selling it for $1 is the worst thing you can do. You still need to report the sale at fair market value…. And their cost base is now $1. Which means when they sell in the future they will have a massive capital gain. With a gift, you still report it as a fair market value sale, but at least they acquire it with a cost base equal to FMV. I repeat. Don’t “gift” with a very low purchase price on the sale contract.

One day my kids will understand how cool it is that I got to hang out with Dave not once, but twice. So far
David Chilton@wealthy_barber

Episode #55 is out now! Our guest this episode is @MarkMcGrathCFP — one of Canada's top voices on evidence-based personal finance and a returning guest from episode #12. Mark recently came out of semi-retirement to launch his own advice-only practice called Phynance which focuses on helping physicians with financial planning. He is also co-author of "Wealthier: The Investing Field Guide for Canadian Millennials." In this episode, Dave and Mark dive into all-in-one ETFs and why simplicity often beats last-mile portfolio optimization for the typical Canadian. They also discuss the renting vs. buying debate as Mark’s family has recently decided to sell their house and become renters. The conversation also explores the limits of the 4% rule, how safe withdrawal rates differ across countries, and whether retirees are more comfortable holding stocks today than they used to be. Along the way, Mark talks about calling out charlatans on Twitter and shares which personal finance opinions he has changed his mind on over the years. Whether you're a DIY investor, a homeowner weighing your options, or anyone trying to cut through the noise of online personal finance commentary, this episode is packed with practical, evidence-based perspective from one of Canada's most trusted financial voices. Tune in now on our website, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and all other podcasting platforms.

Pfff. Rookies. In Canada, back in mid 2000, Nortel Networks grew so fast it made up about 35% of the entire TSE 300 (now the S&P/TSX Composite). Its contribution to the index’s 12-month return was bigger than the other 299 companies combined. 🧵 ...

Some less-often-discussed reasons for today’s challenging detached-home market in many areas. You’ll find this interesting.

A LCA just launched off HMCS Prince Henry carrying Canadians towards the Normandy beaches. Juno Beach was the Allied code name for a 10 km stretch of French coastline assaulted by Canadians on D-Day, 6 June 1944.

We are 4 days into June, Men's Mental Health Month, and today alone I’ve already seen 3 videos online of women mocking it making fun of men that need help including a trending audio of “I don’t care” about June being Men’s Mental Health month. I even saw one woman making a joke about her committing domestic violence against men and laughing about it. Men make up 80% of all suicides each year (over 500,000) because men are less likely to seek support for mental health issues and video like I saw today are EXACTLY the reason why. Men’s mental health is still a joke to so many. We need to DO BETTER.
