Fluent English speakers (many of them at native level), earning $15-25K (USD) a year, with cousins in New Jersey and college friends in London and a Dubai holiday every other year. They watch the same YouTube channels, read the same substacks, have the same reddit-tier vocabulary, the same opinions on work-life balance. In consumption patterns and cultural orientation they're probably closer to someone in Toronto than to some low wage rural guy just 40 km outside their own city. But there are real differences too. This class is deeply, almost reflexively hierarchical in ways that would make a Canadian or American uncomfortable. The driver, the maid, the cook are not abstractions, they're fixtures of daily life, and there's a naturalness to that arrangement that no amount of Western education fully dislodges. And certain instincts from India's interiors still run through its anglophone class: the marriage-as-alliance mindset, a chronic looseness with time and deadlines, a lack of curiosity that sits oddly next to the degrees and credentials, and the comfort with ambiguity in contracts and commitments that would drive an Anglosphere professional up the wall.
