By the way we don't defend human rights for any benefit. It is not glamorous, it is usually pro bono, mostly under perilous conditions. We show up because Kenyans deserve it. Kenyans are amazing people, they are kind and warm and fair.
Any lawyer who is in the human rights defence space for the right reasons will tell you, we show up regardless of who we are defending; Civilian or police it doesn't really matter, where rights are violated or threatened, we will show up like silent guardians, watchful protectors. Naysayers can continue with their usual balderdash.

A friend told me that we should not allow the hiked matatu fare. I told him he needs the matatus more than the matatus need him. He is employed and has to be at work by 8:00 AM without fail. If he doesn’t go to work because of the fare, he risks being fired. In short, beggars are not choosers.
This is why the lady said matatu users are poor and desperate, they don’t have any other means of transport. You either pay the 150, take an Uber for 900 or organize a mass maandamano that will shake this government and push fuel prices below 200.

There are few African countries with three cities that @KenyaAirways serves directly.
Zambia is one of them, with direct flights to Ndola, Lusaka, and Livingstone.
And thankfully so, because Kenya 🇰🇪 and Zambia 🇿🇲 are two countries that should have been neighbors.
I highly recommend the people of both countries to engage more and as much as possible. They are brothers.

@TimKipchumba IMPOSSIBLE in NOTHING!
Please keep your opinion & let those we elected tell us WHAT'S POSSIBLE & what SHOULDN'T BE expect of them.
Seek an elective seat, them your opinion MIGHT JUST CARRY some weight. If we can DOUBLE the Statehouse SPEND, we can surely DOUBLE our thinking.

Fuel costs crisis: Why KSh 50 subsidy could create impossible choices for Kenya tuko.co.ke/editorial/opin…

Prof, @_KithureKindiki , this discussion should have happened on Sunday, why the Matatu strike was announced. Why do we have to ALWAYS WASTE valuable time like it's a Kenyan Sport?
Did the protests have to happen for the government to listen? @JimiWanjigi
English

@tanukeeey @FrankUtdRx @NationAfrica H. E @JimiWanjigi has proposed a total scrapping of VAT & it's replacement by a 5% sales tax. This would go a long way in stimulating the economy due to improved purchasing power & households & firms.

To subsidize fuel by Kes 50, we need to abolish 33 counties. I explain below.
I agree Parliament must be recalled from recess.
They’ll have to do some trade offs and some math.
Some data to start us off:
- Kenya annual consumption : consumes roughly 6–7 billion litres of petroleum products annually (petrol + diesel + kerosene combined).
- Monthly this is 500–600 million litres
Now let’s see what people are asking for in subsidy.
If government subsidized fuel by KSh 50 per litre, the monthly cost would be approximately 50* 500m or 50*600m
This is KSh 25–30 billion per month
[KSh 300–360 billion per year]
What does this mean?
- 72% -86% of county Counties (Equitable Share)
- 51% of Kenya’s entire education budget.
- 2–2.6 times the entire national health budget
- CDF will have been dropped 5X over
-21X statehouse budget
-13X judiciary budget
-7.2X parliament budget
When you hear people mention KSh 50 fuel subsidy as a small measure - it is not a “small relief measure.”
We are in a difficult moment.
And we must remember this in our pursuit for political relevance.
I wish parliament the best. BUT they should definately be recalled from recess.
For once you miss Baba @RailaOdinga. He would know that on a time like this, Jenya is facing a much bigger problem than anything ever in its history.

Parliament must be recalled from recess. Fuel Products must be exempted from VAT. We must reduce Fuel Levies. Extra funds for Subsidies must be provisioned. We are African and Africa is our Business..
English

@NationAfrica None of these is global:
1. Petroleum Development Levy
2. Petroleum Regulatory Levy
3. Road Maintenance Levy
4. Anti-Adulteration Levy
5. Merchant Shipping Levy
6. Railway Development Levy
7. Import Declaration Fee
8. Value Added Tax (VAT)
9. Excise Duty
10. Customs/Import Duty

This life…
While the fuel crisis is global, reactions and its management are local.
This one is not discriminating between developed and not developed countries, western or eastern, north versus south divide, resource rich versus resource poor, good countries and bad countries. There is trouble everywhere. Some like the Philippines long declared a state of emergency, while others planned for impending shortages.
Sadly, analysts are saying this fuel crisis is only doing press ups.
It is likely to take a toll that will last the rest of the year, even if the war ended today and the Strait of Hormuz reopened.
We need to pull a chair and work on long term strategies that could even include rationing and working from home. And what seem like simple solutions may not really be. There are trade offs in every suggested solution. Let us be transparent about those trade offs. We need to dial down on partisan politics and come together tondu ni kuhio, things are going to be hot before they get better.
Let it be said that at a time of global crisis, our local responses were determined to see us through its cascading economic impacts. We pray.

The first thing @AdanMohamedCS should work on as CG KRA is to review the tax exemptions. Ksh 510B in tax exemptions looks crazy. From VAT exemptions & zero rating to corporate tax incentives to import duty exemptions to personal tax exemptions etc. Hapa ndio kuna ukora sana!
English

@Belive_Kinuthia @NdindiNyoro Am shocked that you don't know that our parliament works for the Executive. That's what NDINDI was doing in his FIRST TWO years as chairman of Budget Committee. The solution is to COMPLETELY do away with VAT in Kenya on all products. Let Re-evaluate our TAX POLICIES @JimiWanjigi
English

Yes, it's not the fault of the government that the fuel prices are the way they are.
But what do you think the government should do?
Do we go by Ndindi Nyoro’s proposals?
This is what @NdindiNyoro proposed.
✅️Amendment on the VAT act to reduce VAT on fuel products from 8% to Zero.
✅️Reduction of RMLF by Ksh 7 through the revocation of the Road Maintenance Levy Fund Order, 2024.
But isn't that the work of the parliament?
