@WarcMeinstein great read
maybe the best follow up piece to Citrini that i've seen yet

With jumps this far from our current experience, fiction is often a good place to look for inspiration
Iain M. Banks’ Culture series is the gold standard for post-scarcity:
Hyper-intelligent AI Minds run everything: No money, no forced work, citizens live for pleasure, art, and adventure while Minds handle perfect coordination.
Intelligence abundance renders scarcity economics irrelevant.
That's the Utopian vision - the dystopian vision is even easier to imagine

@GavinSBaker @Citrini7 What about @DarioAmodei prediction we have a "Country of geniuses in a data center" within 1-3 years?
English

Loved the @Citrini7 thought piece.
However seems unlikely we will have enough compute for this scenario in 2028, or even the early 2030s. Distillation, quantization and Edge AI cannot bridge the gap.
AGI is an event horizon with a significant compute dependence.

@rleshner @trader1sz @tarunchitra @ASvanevik @cmagnust @sendmanager @senditfun Honestly, I invested in this because they showed me a character of myself in the game.
The loss is punishment for my vanity, and not the first or last time i'll lose money angel investing.

@trader1sz @tarunchitra @WarcMeinstein @ASvanevik @cmagnust @sendmanager @senditfun I’m a professional investor, I lose money on investments ALL THE TIME, and it’s not a crime for a company to fail
English

Yo @tarunchitra @rleshner @WarcMeinstein @ASvanevik
I heard you all got rugged investing into degen wars by @cmagnust and @sendmanager
They’re now running @senditfun
I have thier kycs if you’d like to take it to the authorities. I’m told you couldn’t do much before because they were anonymous which made them easily nuke the investor tg chat and run off with your money

Happiness is default relative, although you can train yourself away from that

Friday story:
Once upon a time, a senior exec at my trading firm stole a business I’d created once it became profitable & impactful. This happens all the time in finance.
To diffuse my anger, he said: “don’t worry, we’ll both die with money in our bank accounts.”
Moral: his words were little consolation, because what matters to your psychology is not what you have, but what you think you should have.
Society is in for some major turbulence, despite the fact that the working class enjoy a quality of life that is obviously better than Louis XIV

So many people on here obsess about wealth, but it's worth remembering that billionaires live mostly the same way you do. Technology has collapsed the experiential divide. Rich people use the same LLMs you do. They watch the same Netflix shows, the same movies, the same sports. They are addicted to their phones just like you are, and they browse the same stuff on social media. There's no special Internet for rich people. IMO, the gap between the middle class and the 0.01% is the smallest it's ever been.

I'm surprised by the number of technologists who are in awe of top-down economic planning. Autocracy breaks down because there is an insufficient two way flow of information; the bottom is too afraid to report the ground truth to the top. Eventually these systems break for this reason.
Biological equivalent would be a heart pumping blood to the limbs through the arteries without veins to return blood to the heart. A body can't function like this.
In the 60s, many thought leaders believed there was no way a liberal democracy like the US could compete with a planned economy like the Soviet Union. @crmiller1 did an excellent job detailing this in Chip War.
What's different this time?
