According to BLS data, median weekly earnings for welders & cutters were $371 in 1985 (~$9.28/hr at 40 hrs/wk) and $376 in 1986. Varied by location/industry/experience/union—manufacturing often $8-12/hr range across the decade. (Nominal dollars; inflation-adjusted to today it'd be ~$27/hr.)
