Watch this heartfelt appeal by the Chairman of the Scottish Creel Fishermen's Federation about the impact of illegal and LEGAL dredging in our seas. It's a scandal its still able to continue legally. vimeo.com/298748973

Only 5% of Scotland's coastal waters are protected from #scallopdredging. It has caused widespread damage over decades and continues to undermine recovery of inshore fisheries and our environment. Illegal dredging is a symptom of a much bigger problem. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotla…

Does anyone believe that Mr Ewing's heart is in this "protecting of the seas" he's reading a script - there's nothing behind his words. Nothing much anyway. We need more of our ministers as we face a global crisis in the environment.
Open Seas@TheOpenSeas

2/2 When pushed about the events being reported on the BBC today, Mr Ewing states it is Government's intention that all vessel are "covering by tracking, to show where the vessel is, and monitoring to show what is taking place on the vessels".

Back in February, divers found evidence of #scallopdredging in the Firth of Lorn protected area. A recovering seafloor wrecked for a few sacks of #scallops. Eight months on, this problem is still afflicting our coastal seas... openseas.org.uk/news/open-seas… twitter.com/TheOpenSeas/st…

This film was shot over a “Flat” seabed, not sure which bright spark thought that they can neatly trim the kelp while working from a boat in a swell using a mechanical dredge and not damage the environment. #NoKelpDredge #SoundofJura

vimeo.com/298748973 It is no longer a rational or acceptable argument, put forward repeatedly by scallop dredging interests, that they need to retain open access for the sake of the socio economic benefits that widespread and indiscriminate dredging apparently provides [!]

This footage was taken inside Gairloch protected area. About 20m further on, a scallop dredge tow has decimated the seabed. These habitats are scallop spawning grounds, cod nurseries and home to a range of species. We need dredging out of these sensitive waters.

We have requested an urgent meeting with @strathearnrose to raise concerns over proposals to dredge kelp as feel this is a serious threat to inshore fisheries and could cost jobs on the west coast. Also at odds with @scotgov commitments to sustainable inshore usage. #NoKelpDredge
