I saw my first Roma circa 1994 when I walked up to the Baggot St AIB ATM one morning circa 10.15 am (in those days in the Civil Service you got 20 mins ‘bank leave’ every two weeks) and suddenly this woman in traditional costume walked up to me and pushed a card at me that read ‘Bosnian - please help’. Of course she wasn’t Bosnian but Roma. Over the next three years every parking meter in Dublin 2 seemed to sprout its own Roma female.
In 1999 I witnessed an Irish down & out being intimidated off his begging patch on Exchequer St by a Roma man and woman. The old winos that for years begged from traffic passing the Iveagh Baths were also driven away and replaced by Roma kids. No ballads were written about that.

As I've been saying for ages; we have imported our homeless problem. Not only are the majority of our homeless not Irish citizens, many of those who are homeless Irish citizens were born elsewhere.
Diagnosing the problem is one thing, doing something about it is more important.
