When I first decided to give fiction writing another shot, I had some rough times. It is a story that needs to be shared, but very difficult to write. I put it on hold for my WIP now. I went back the other day and started reading the book on hold. It’s rough. But in four years I’ve learned so much and I’m so happy I put it on hold. It’s a story I will write and when I do, it will be written better than it would have been beforehand.

I know some days are tougher than others to write. Sometimes you just don't feel like it, or you get too busy. Maybe it even turns into months at a time. Don't worry yourself over it. Your story will be waiting for you when you're ready to come back. 💙

@DonKeehotey @HJamesWrites Ha, at least you have great taste. That instinct, that pull toward a certain rhythm or voice, is actually a gift. Now we strip the Gatsby scaffolding and find YOUR version of that story. That's where it gets interesting.

@HJamesWrites I was writing fiction and thought it was pretty good. Kept going and thought, wait, this is very good. Kept going and realized it was TOO good. I was basically plariarizing "The Great Gatsby."

Sometimes when I'm writing, I'll pause and reread something I wrote, wondering why I put that in my story. I leave it and move on, and usually somewhere along the way, I find the perfect reason for adding it. 📚📝 Does this ever happen to you?

@writercollin Great advice. And before you invest in covers or serializing, have you had a beta read done? Solid feedback early saves a lot of rework down the line. Happy to take a look.

Writers, if you can, genuinely learn to draw. I know it doesn't sound easy, and it's not, but it is a good skill to have. Many old fiction authors also drew. Also consider posting your lit on online circles or serialized without an expensive cover artist. See if people pick it up and like it. From my genuine experience, readers WILL buy a physical copy!

@Dakartwelve Hard agree. Flawed choices and messy emotions are what make readers stay up until 2am. Logic tells you what happened, passion makes you care.

a story NEEDS mistakes, it NEEDS irrationality, it NEEDS passion and emotion to override """logic""", otherwise it's nothing. it's boring and methodological and you're writing a fucking equation.

same thing if you say a character is being irrational. people do irrational shit all the time, often feeling that it's the Only Thing They CAN Do. stories need propelant and giving every character fucking cognitive behavioural therapy is the opposite of that

Juniper is the first book I remember reading where weaving has a major role in the plot and a significant amount of time is spent on it.

Ronia the Robber’s Daughter. I have an English copy now, but the Norwegian translation was the one I read as a kid. I think that copy is still at my parent’s house. One of the first I remember reading on my own. Runner up is Juniper by Monica Furlong.
