Before: “just a tidy up please.” After: walking out like I’ve sorted my life, set boundaries and suddenly make excellent decisions. Haircuts are absolute liars ✂️✂️😂

@BMLBod @JoeBrownLondon My ‘father-in-law’ was telling me today about his childhood trips on the LOR when he used to visit family in Liverpool!

@JoeBrownLondon The LOR asked BR for financial support to help with repairs in the mid 50s. I assume they didn’t stump up but it’s fascinating to think of what might’ve become of it had they done so.

#OnThisDay 69 years ago the fascinating Liverpool Overhead Railway closed. The LOR was the world's first electric elevated railway, the first to use automatic signalling and to use EMUs. Clip from this great video on Ruairidh MacVeigh's YouTube: buff.ly/S8UfaDk

Train Going Over A Bridge At Night, Eric Ravilious, 1935. At this time Ravilious was living in Bank House, Castle Hedingham with his wife Tirzah. This painting is one of a series featuring scenes from his time in #Essex. The original artwork is in the collection of @TownerGallery

@MoTGM Is it the old Clarence Hotel in Llandudno? A web search brings up a more recent picture of it on eBay, with shops to the right of it featuring half-circle name signs above the doors 🤔

This week's #MysteryMonday pic is unusual - we don't know where it is, the photo came to us as part of a bequest with no location notes. If you know where the Clarence Hotel was, next to Evans the butcher, please tell us. Could this be a Charterplan trip somewhere in Wales...?

That gorgeous hallmark Vaux signage over the door on this shot from the 80s. Proper classic Durham this. Unknown original source.

As noted, the rain kind of drenched the rest of the day... a brisk visit to Mountain Warehouse for new walking shoes ensued to move the blisters to another part of my feet! Day 3 commenced at Frosterley on a clear but cloudy morning, a far cry from the storms the day prior. I'm keen to get back onto the railway, but I did want to highlight the Frosterley Inn. It was previously the Railway Tavern, perhaps giving us a hint when the first line opened here, the Frosterley & Stanhope Railway in the 1840s. It certainly crops up by 1857 when the first Ordnance Survey was produced. Then, it was on the end of a terrace at the eastern entrance of the village. The owner of the property, which dates back to the mid 18th century, may have capitalised on the railway and opened an inn with a familiar coinage to attract clientele (a bit like using the old hashtags on social media to attract attention). The field behind it held a mass demonstration & gala of Weardale quarrymen in 1882. Between 500-600 workmen of various lodges congregated here to fight for great liberties and working rights. This was a Miners Gala of their own, marching with blue bunches on their outfits and the Stanhope Saxborn band, and they actually collaborated with pitmens associations to agitate for greater working conditions. Genuinely so hard to believe it happened in a sleepy village like this. This one appears to have become a Vaux Tavern in the 20th century, but is back to being an independent. I, very regrettably, have no more photos at Stanhope because the downpour felt like a monsoon after some 20 miles of walking😮‍💨 Here’s one though of the Market Place which features the old Stanhope Hotel, on the right of both shots. This is another house, with a shop now attached, from the early 19th century. Tricky to research though given the Stanhope Hotel in South Shields we covered at the beginning of this journey. I don't get the impression it was a hotel very long. It was later J&G Archibald Ltd Ironmongers as you can see below from 1955. They also had branches at Durham and Chester-le-Street and offered household appliances like "Colt Cowls" for your chimney, "Servis Washers" (early washing machines!) and other such modern fancy goods.
