I used to have a favorite cousin. We grew up together and she’s just a year older than me. We did everything together as kids, played, molded clay houses, called each other by our names. We were so close and practically inseparable. There was even a time we had to go stay at our grandparents’ place together because of how attached we were. We never had issues until I got admission into the university while she was in a polytechnic. That was when her mum started acting funny towards me, and it got to a point where I stopped going to their house. Then one day, out of nowhere, her mum asked my age in front of my mum. My mum answered, and she tried to argue it. My mum got upset and asked if she was the one who gave birth to me. That was when she said, “Even if that’s the case, Bola is still older than Derin, so she shouldn’t be calling her by name again. She has to start adding ‘Aunty.’” That was where everything changed. My cousin too started acting different and began insisting I call her “Aunty Bola.” My mum told me to just do it for peace, but I refused. She told her younger sister who I’m 8 years older than to start calling me by my name if I wouldn’t call her “aunty.” I didn’t even argue, I accepted it. Since 2019, things have never been the same. Our relationship turned sour, and till today I still refused to give anyone of them a chance to speak to me again, the parents inclusive.

What's the worst thing a family member has ever done to you?

I hope your answer will still be YES and you will never testify against your father or siblings if any of them rape your 8 year old daughter to death?

As of now, the women on Twitter have been dividèd. The core feminists groups said they would back winifred up and that the rape case isn't as serious as it should be cos winifred wasn't involved. They believe this is not a time to talk about a rape case, but to protect winifred. The other group of women, some who are ordinary and those who are not core femìnists, believe that winifred has for long shielded her family and stopped Ochanya from getting justice. They believe she's aware of everything and will forever back her family. This will be toughh.
