An entire town in rural Alabama conspired to withhold from my great-grandmother that her son was listed "missing in action" in the newspaper. She didn't read the paper, and only came to town once a month. Everyone knew her son (my grandfather) was missing, and that his ship had been torpedoed in the Atlantic. They were all waiting for her to receive the telegram, but it never came. He'd actually been rescued and placed on another ship, which was also torpedoed and sunk, hence the confusion. He survived the war and lived until I was 5.

@KILLTOPARTY My wife’s grandfather did this. He had a massive quonset hut in the yard on their farm for storage, and he built a room in the corner complete with A/C and a full bath. Would only come in the house for meals.

My unit (1-1 Cavalry, 1AD) replaced 3-7 Cavalry, 3rd ID. They'd captured an Iraqi Republican Guard base which we then occupied & lived in for many months. I came later, so never met any of the 3rd ID guys, but story was they'd seen a lot, and the unit had an Apocalypse Now vibe.

@amanofthesoil It sucks that it seems the early years of OIF and OEF, and those who were there, have been forgotten these days. My dad was there, with the 3rd ID, during the invasion. He had plenty of experience with mines and IEDs between Iraq and Afghanistan, especially in the latter.
