Oh, I know the word! Pathological. That's how you name something as harmful without commenting on how it intersects with the tangled web of concepts collectively referred to or adjacent to Adiction.
Organizermemes@OrganizerMemes

@TaylorLorenz What's another word for developing habits that are harmful to your well being? If you ended up obsessively listening to music or calling friends and feeling compelled to do so, I'd classify that as an addiction.

@LA_Knight89 Yeah, a vast number of people did assume that. The story was accompanied by a description of the author which read merely "Isabel Fall was born in 1988," so they pretty much only had the title and content to go on. The title seems relevant 🤷

in Isabel Fall's "Helicopter Story" (2020), the narrator is a US military pilot who bombs a school because an AI designated it as a target. for the crime of writing this story, its author, an anonymous trans woman, was hounded from public life by luminaries of sci-fi literature.

@bibliosexual Sure, I just think she could still publish under the name Isabel Fall if it had first been published as "Helicopter Story"

@big_cheddars @fag_daughter When I think "luminaries of sci-fi literature" I think of the teams responsible for the Hugos first and foremost, and then I guess the Nebulas. And of those people, obviously some of them liked it!

@SandyofCthulhu I'm still in the Old Forest with Tom Bombadil and the barrow-wight. As soon as I get away from one, I run back into the other, and they advance nothing just like the last time I ran into them. I hope to lose my mind soon.

They think LOTR is verbose because they think it’s long because it’s in three volumes. LOTR snaps right along. If you want verbose, read Lovecraft. He can describe a forest or a house in incredible detail. But since Lovecraft’s stories are short, he doesn’t get the reputation for being long-winded. Which, as I said, Tolkien doesn’t deserve. Caveat - I found the Silmarillion impenetrable. But not because of lengthy descriptions.
Kendric Tonn@kendrictonn

@conan_esq The "Tolkien spends pages and pages describing a leaf or single tree!!" meme is the most baffling, when his actual prose is generally spare, direct, distant-covering, and has more than a little similarity to his rough contemporary, that avatar of verbosity, Ernest Hemingway

@kendrictonn @conan_esq I will forever repeat my thesis that this entire meme stems from most of these people giving up at the exact same point in the story - the Old Forest-Tom Bombadil chapters.

Except sex positive feminism isn’t moralizing sex as “good” at all. It’s combatting the puritanical view of sex used to oppress women & encouraging women to take ownership of their sexuality
Jessica Starling@JStarlingGames

Liberal sex positive feminism and right-wing sex negative feminism are different sides of the same fascist coin Moralizing sex as “good” or “bad” is a failure and the type of mythologizing that is essential to fascism

Men! Please pay attention. I attended a wedding recently. The Save the Date, official invitation, and reminder texts all stated guests are to wear ALL BLACK COCKTAIL ATTIRE. One woman was in green. She asked me in the ladies’ room if there was a dress code, I told her yes. She was a plus one and her date only told her to wear a nice dress. She was the only one in attendance who wasn’t in black. She was beautifully dressed, but still, HE should have told her. Details are important, fellas.

@norabird There are important, real rules. Skilled storytellers rely on the existence of rules even as they break them! The rules keep your story from sucking shit before you're good enough to break them, and breaking them elegantly creates a powerful contrast against expectations.

TERFs are simultaneously like “we must prevent our fertile nubile young girls from getting mastectomies and hysterectomies” and then immediately say “every woman would get rid of her breasts and her uterus if she could”
terfologian@terfologian

@GundamDoll The difference is that your experience of your biology is that you feel good about things like breasts and a hormonal cycle when 99% of c1s women would ditch those aspects of our biology no questions asked, because 100% of us don't want to be women

They’re trying to cancel sodomy. They’re making sodomy immoral again. They’re saying sodomy is physical and spiritual death. And I’m supposed to just go about my day and not scroll on my phone??
