This week the Standing Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources will be travelling to Newfoundland and Labrador as part of our study of my province’s offshore petroleum industry. By meeting industry professionals, consulting stakeholders and visiting work sites and research facilities, this visit will help the committee gain a deeper understanding of the importance of Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore petroleum industry and how different it is from the sector in other parts of Canada - unimpeded access to the market, higher quality and value product, less impact on the environment and lower cost production. The Canadian European-Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is an important instrument for both the EU and Canada as we work to diversify our trading partners. My friend and Member of the European Parliament, Javier Moreno Sanchez, has championed this agreement through the European Parliament and advocated for a stronger relationship between Canada and the EU. A resolution was passed today in the European Parliament for the full adoption and ratification of the Trade Agreement. CETA is good for Canada and good for our EU partners. That is because last night, Canadian Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the 2025 NBA MVP, tied the record. A monumental achievement by a future legend of the game. Every Canadian should be proud. The persecution of Druze, Alawites, Christians and other minorities in Syria is concerning in the extreme. At the Standing Committee for National Security, Defense and Veterans Affairs, I participated in clause-by-clause examination of Bill C-12, through which the Government seeks to expand border enforcement powers, reform the immigration and asylum systems and strengthen measures against money laundering. While Bill C-12 has flaws, some provisions are clearly overdue. The Ocean Ranger sinking on February 15, 1982, marks the deadliest offshore petroleum sector accident in Canadian history. “The loss of the Ocean Ranger was not just a terrible tragedy but a wake-up call to the oil industry, the provincial and federal governments, and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador”. Today, we remember all the lives lost in this tragedy, and we recognize the efforts of the Ocean Ranger Legacy Foundation to return artifacts from the rig to Newfoundland and Labrador from Ottawa. Last week in Calgary I met with senior leadership from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers. Lisa Baiton, CEO, Brad Herald, VP and Senior Special Advisor, and Richard Wong, Vice President, Regulatory and Operations and I discussed Newfoundland and Labrador’s petroleum industry and its major economic benefits to our province and country, the importance of responsible resource development and ways to ensure Canada’s petroleum sector remains safe, viable, forward-looking and welcoming to investors. Premier Tony Wakeham’s decision to not participate in the federal firearms buyback program is the right call. This quarter of a billion dollar program is not only a waste of money, but also completely ineffective in addressing crime. In reality, this program targets legal firearm owners and hunters, and fails to crack down on criminals. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians use their guns for hunting, sport and other legitimate uses. Criminals will not line up to surrender their illegal and smuggled weapons I agree with Premier Wakeham, the resources that will be poured into this program would be better spent as investments in crime prevention and law enforcement.
